Call for York City youngsters to bounce back

COACH Steve Torpey has called on his York City young guns to bounce back in style after they crashed out of the FA Youth Cup, writes Peter Martini.

The Minstermites fell 5-0 at Northampton on Wednesday night, albeit with the scoreline not reflecting the game as a whole.

The City youngsters now host Chesterfield tomorrow at the Wigginton Road training centre (11am) looking to mantain their unbeaten run in the Football League Youth Alliance North East division.

“The scoreline probably flattered Northampton a bit,” said Torpey.

“But it was a disappointing result and we need to bounce back to winning ways.

“We’re still joint-top of the league and we’re seeking a good performance (tomorrow).”

The star for the Cobblers was striker Ivan Toney, who hit four goals as his side turned on the style following David Moyo’s 34th-minute opener.

“It was quite close for the first 40 minutes and we had two or three really good chances whereas they had one shot,” said Torpey.

“They scored a well-worked goal and then got a penalty on the stroke of half-time, so we went in 2-0 down but had been well in the game and had probably had the better chances.

“We then conceded a third goal early in the second half, and after that we tried to force the game, which left us a bit open at the back, and we conceded two more goals as we went forward with nothing really to lose.”
