YORK City’s Capital One Cup hopes were clinically extinguished by an impressive Burnley side last night.

The Championship outfit enjoyed a 4-0 victory at Bootham Crescent after delivering a finishing masterclass.

David Jones’ 12th-minte goal set the Clarets on their way and equally emphatic second-half efforts from Junior Stanislas, Danny Ings and Scott Arfield emphasised the gulf between the two teams.

City, had, though made a real contest of the first tie during a spirited first-half display after Jones’ opening strike.

Nigel Worthington made two changes to the side that started Saturday’s 1-0 home win against Northampton.

Richard Cresswell dropped out of the squad with his place taken by full debutant Ryan Bowman.

At left-back, meanwhile, Jamal Fyfield earned a recall with Preston refusing to grant permission for on-loan defender Ben Davies to play in the tie.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche paid the ultimate compliment to the Minstermen by fielding the same starting XI that helped to earn a 1-1 draw with Lancashire rivals Bolton at the weekend.

The visitors made all the early running in a purposeful start with Sam Vokes heading against Michael Ingham’s crossbar after just three minutes following a blistering burst down the right by full-back Kieran Trippier.

Ings then sidefooted wide from 15 yards after good work down the opposite flank by Stanislas and Danny Lafferty.

In the fifth minute, Ingham made a brilliant reflex save to keep out Vokes’ thumping shot on the turn from ten yards.

Clarets centre-back Kevin Long went close twice in quick succession, blasting wide from 25 yards before heading across the face of goal from a Stanislas corner.

Frustratingly, for the Minstermen, it was from the next flag-kick that Burnley forged in front when Jones attacked the near post unopposed to finish first time past an exposed Ingham following Ross Wallace’s delivery from the right.

But the hosts, who had largely chased shadows up to that point, began to make their presence felt after falling behind.

Estonian international Sander Puri went close with a 30-yard drive on 21 minutes but immediately after unleashing the shot was clutching his hamstring and had to be replaced by Michael Coulson.

Bowman also narrowly cleared the bar with a dipping 15-yard attempt and, after Ings had narrowly missed the target at the other end for the visitors, Craig Clay called Clarets ’keeper Tom Heaton into action for the first time with a low save from a decent long-distance strike.

Burnley continued to look a threat at set-pieces, however, with Jason Shackell heading wide from another Wallace centre.

Coulson, though, had the final say of the half with a well-driven free-kick that whistled over from 25 yards.

After the restart, Stanislas fired wide after sidestepping a Lanre Oyebanjo challenge on the edge of the box while, for City, Ashley Chambers’ left-wing free-kick skimmed off Chris Smith’s head and forced Heaton into a smart save.

But it was Burnley who got the decisive second goal of the game on 61 minutes.

Bowman lost possession in his own half and Trippier was quick to capitalise, sprinting down the right wing before finding Stanislas, who clinically found Ingham’s bottom left-hand corner with a first-time, ten-yard strike.

On 78 minutes, Ings then put the outcome beyond doubt, surviving strong offside appeals after racing clear through the right channel.

He then exchanged passes with Dean Marney before beating Ingham at his near post.

Substitute Arfield went on to add a fourth with a composed finish into Ingham’s bottom left-hand corner after being picked out in the penalty box 12 yards from goal. Wes Fletcher, making his City debut as a substitute against his old team, might have snatched an 89th-minute consolation, but Heaton was equal to his 15-yard effort.
