EVERY member of York City’s record-breaking 1983/84 title-winning season, bar the late, great Keith Walwyn, will grace Thursday’s Champions and Centurions Dinner at York Racecourse.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the club becoming the first to rack up 100 points in a league season, organiser Graham Bradbury has managed to track down all the players from the legendary team.

The likes of current Sunderland boss Ricky Sbragia, John Byrne and Keith Houchen will also be joined in the Voltigeur Suite by famous managerial duo Denis Smith and Viv Busby.

Chris Evans, City’s right-back from that period and now assistant manager at Premier League outfit Bolton Wanderers, admitted to the Diary that the gathering will be a unique occasion. He said: “It’s something everybody is looking forward to, reminiscing over that period. I’m in my 30th year of football and my times with York were as special as any I’ve had in the game.

“It will be the first time the squad, management, directors and fans will have been together since those days and, as everyone’s getting older, I can’t see it happening again. There are going to be 400 people there, which shows what affection the city still holds for the achievement and the terrific characters in that team.

“I don’t tend to keep photos but I have from that period. I have one of my late father when we are celebrating the title in the streets of York. He travelled from Wales to see every game that season and I’ve got a picture with him on one of the supporter’s shoulders, which means a lot to me.

“Many players and managers go through careers without winning anything, so my championship medal at York means as much to me as other players winning the FA Cup because that was the level I played at.”

Evans also paid tribute to Bradbury’s exhaustive work in organising the evening.

He said: “Graham has been absolutely fantastic in having an idea and following it through to the end. His attention to detail and ability to track everybody down has been outstanding.

“Nobody is more passionate about the club than Graham. He has always been York City through and through.”

While on the theme of famous City sides, an opportunity has arisen to own an excellent package of memorabilia from the 1995 Coca-Cola Cup victory over Manchester United, while helping a worthy cause at the same time.

A City v United programme from the tie, signed on the front cover by the victorious Minstermen squad, is being auctioned off along with various Yorkshire Evening Press supplements from the famous two-legged game and a “one-off” DVD containing highlights of the tie and interviews with Sir Alex Ferguson and Pat McGibbon.

The highest bid, received by 4pm on April 21, will then be donated to the Shaun Lee Johnstone Brain Tumour Trust.

Boroughbridge-based Shaun died of an undiagnosed brain tumour at the age of 16 in 1998.

The significance of the auctioned items is that Shaun collected the autographs himself during his work for City’s then first-team coach providers Dodsworth’s.

Shaun’s father Ray said: “He cleaned the coaches after school but really enjoyed helping out on trips. He used to keep the OAPs entertained during their excursions and really enjoyed travelling with the footballers.”

Brain tumours have recently overtaken leukaemia as the biggest cause of death in children. They are also the second leading cause of cancer death in young adults up to the age of 34.

Shaun’s charity fund has raised £25,000 for research purposes since 2002 with his father completing a 150-mile sponsored run in Bordeaux over six days.

Ray is also a member of Ripon Runners, whose members have tackled the London Marathon in Shaun’s honour.

Anybody wanting to place a bid, should email ian@ yorkminstermen.org.uk, phone or text 07990 975300 or write to Ian Tyssen, York Minstermen, c/o York City Football Club, Bootham Crescent, York, YO30 7AQ.

The bids will be regularly updated at www.yorkminstermen.org.uk with the winner able to claim their prize on Tuesday, April 21 at the final home game of the season against Forest Green Rovers.

At the time of going to press, the highest bid received was £75.

It’s tight at top of The Press ratings

ONLY six points now separate the top seven in this season’s Press Player of the Year standings.

Simon Rusk and Mark Robinson both strengthened their positions with man-of-the-match performances against Telford and Forest Green respectively, collecting three points apiece.

Other points at Telford went to Shaun Pejic (two) and Andy McWilliams (one) as our second and third-highest rated players.

Ben Purkiss (two) and Michael Ingham (one), meanwhile, were also rewarded for their efforts at Forest Green to close in on joint-leaders David McGurk and Danny Parslow.

The two Player of the Month bonus points on offer, for the player who polled most man-of-the-match votes from visitors to our website, were shared by Purkiss and Levi Mackin at Telford and collected by Onome Sodje against Forest Green.
