MARVIN ARMSTRONG’s York City debut ‘couldn’t have gone much better’ after a impressive first outing for the Minstermen.

Armstrong played a pivotal part of Adam Hinshelwood’s first victory as York manager, as Lenell John-Lewis’ 89th minute header earned City a 1-0 victory over play-off bound Aldershot Town.

An important three points reinstated some hope back into the York supporters, with City clinching their first victory in over a month.

New recruit Armstrong also made his debut after joining from Barnet on Friday for an undisclosed fee, with the midfielder lauding the City supporters for their passionate display.

“It couldn’t (have gone much better), the results haven’t been right recently, so when the gaffer brought me in he obviously wanted me to help put that right,” Hinshelwood enthused.

“To get the man-of-the-match and a result at home in the front of the fans, the fans were very passionate, it was great.

“I’d like to think that I was able to show it today, and what I could bring to the table and bring to the club.

"It’s a great club and I just want to work hard, I think that we have got more than enough to stay up and if we do that then we are ready to go for next season with the new manager.

“The crowd are so supportive, as players we need to compliment that with more effort. It’s a minimum, and I think that we played really well  on the ball today with our passing, so I think that the crowd were happy.

“We played an Aldershot team that I think are really good, I’ve played them twice this season and I thought that they were really good, they’ve gotten better.

“But I thought that we played them off of the park at points today, we dominated the majority of the game and I don’t think that York have been doing that for a while.

“The lads are buzzing, everyone is just happy to get Hinsh’s first three points, and I think that he is happy.”

Despite a battling performance, Armstrong admitted that he was struggling after producing his first 90 minute display of the campaign, and believed that a point would have still been a good result for City.

“This season it’s probably not more than 60 minutes, 65 minutes," Armstrong confessed.

“I definitely was tired, the last 20 every time he was making a sub I was looking over to see if I was coming off.

“I wanted to come off, but we were fighting to stay in it and he hadn’t taken me off, and there were so many fans there who were so passionate so I kept going. I gave it my all.

“In the last five minutes I was saying to Callum Howe that even if we have got to just take the point, it is still a good point.

“Just stay in the game, it would have still been a good point, but John has come on in the game and scored and I think that’s a we deserved the win.

“We played really well, we deserved the win, sometimes you get a bit of luck but you earn your luck.”

Armstrong may have had some reservations about joining a York squad currently occupying a spot in the Vanarama National League relegation zone, but the midfielder never felt that way, and firmly believes that the Minstermen can stay up.

The 25-year-old also spoke on his close relationship with Hinshelwood, having previously worked together at Worthing, and explained how the move came about.

Armstrong said: “It’s a really good group, and the quality in the team doesn’t reflect on the position that we are in in the table.

“The quality is there, if we can match the effort levels, the passion and the same passion that the fans show, then we will get results.

“We go there (Bromley), hopefully get a result and we keep pushing. We’ve got six games.

“I worked with the manager for three years at Worthing and he helped me to kick on, he improved me so much as a player.

“We’ve worked so much together and he has shown a lot of belief in me, so when I saw he was here I was really open to it.

“The owner got in touch with my agent and I told my agent that I was up for it, I’m happy to come here.”
