THE Minstermen got exactly what they needed from the first game of their pre-season schedule as they eased to a comfortable 4-1 win over new Evo-Stik premier division outfit Farsley Celtic.

With the sun beating down at Throstle Nest, it was a typical summer’s day but it was far from a typical, slow-paced opening warm-up game.

In fact, it was pretty competitive as City's Amari Morgan-Smith would testify after a heavy second-minute tackle sent him crashing to the turf.

With Jon Worsnop between the sticks and two other new signings, Louis Almond and Josh Law, making debuts, Gary Mills' side had a new look to it.

But it took the Minstermen just ten minutes to settle into their stride.

Having forced a corner, it was taken short to Sean Newton and his deep cross was headed in at the far post by Danny Parslow.

Veteran striker Jon Parkin doubled that lead midway through the first half when he rifled home from ten yards after the home side failed to deal with a ball into the area.

The Celts pegged one back before the half hour when last season’s leading scorer James Walshaw lifted the ball over Worsnop.

But the Minstermen took a two-goal advantage into the break – Parkin converting Simon Heslop’s 42nd minute cross with a predatory finish.

City boss Mills fielded a completely different side in the second half and there were more debuts and trialists on show.

The home side, meanwhile, made three changes at the break and the second 45 minutes was fractured by several more substitutions by Farsley with some players coming back on later in the game.

The bottom line was that, after wining the first half 3-1, the Minstermen won the second period 1-0.

Kaine Felix slotted in the visitors' fourth goal just eight minutes into the second half after a good solo run.
