YORK City’s chance of a relegation reprieve has been quashed after Leyton Orient avoided being wound up in the High Court.

The East London side were relegated from the Football League at the end of last term, but their National League status for 2017/18 was under threat due to a reported £250,000 unpaid tax bill.

Had the Brisbane Road club been refused admission to the National League, then the Minstermen, as the highest-placed relegated side in 2016/17, would have reclaimed their spot in the division for the new campaign.

But it has been confirmed that Orient’s creditors have now been paid in full and that controversial owner Francesco Becchetti will remain at the helm.

When previously commenting on the prospect of profiting at Orient’s expense, City chief Gary Mills said: “I’m not praying or anything like that but, if it did happen, we’d take it.”
