BIG Jon Parkin can “gobble up” National League North next season.

That is the viewpoint of York City team-mate Danny Holmes who started last term at this year’s title-winners AFC Fylde.

Powerhouse striker Parkin has agreed a new one-year contract at Bootham Crescent and will be playing sixth tier football for the first time in his career.

The 35-year-old, former Championship campaigner has 196 career goals to his name, having netted 20 times in 2016/17, including 16 for City following his December arrival from Newport.

Commenting on Parkin’s threat in regionalised football, Holmes said: “He could gobble it up to be honest. He could get a hatful of goals because people won’t like to play against him. He’s always a handful - and he’s horrible - but great for us.

“He’s just the 'main man', isn’t he? We know with Jon that, if we’re in trouble, we can always hit him and he’s a great outlet for us.

“Even if he doesn’t win the ball, he is that much of a nuisance that something can drop down to us and we can get something from it.

"He was involved with all three goals at Wembley (during City’s 3-2 FA Trophy final triumph over Macclesfield) and he deserved to get the winner after the season he’d had.

“Aidy (Connolly) nicked the limelight a bit but big Jon was the difference and got us the winner, really, because Aidy just had to poke it in.”

Lancashire coastal club Fylde finished six points ahead of their nearest rivals Kidderminster to take the northern honours this season after scoring 109 league goals.

Prolific striker Danny Rowe, 28, netted 50 times and hit six hat-tricks.

At the other end of the pitch, meanwhile, Fylde’s defensive record was only the eighth best in the division and Holmes reasoned that attacking potency counts for more than defensive solidity in National League North.

“Fylde had great firepower, which probably took some of the attention away from their defensive frailties, because they could have been better at the back when I was there,” he said. “That annoyed me at times but that’s just the way I am.

“But Danny Rowe and Dan Bradley were good players going forward, which I feel we have got as well.”
