YORK City manager Gary Mills is ready to 'go loopy' if his players secure victory tomorrow and avoid the drop.

The Minstermen host play-off qualifiers Forest Green Rovers knowing that defeat will signal relegation to National League North.

Even victory will only guarantee National League survival if Torquay United or Guiseley drop points or Woking lose at Dagenham.

A draw will be enough if both Guiseley and Braintree Town lose.

Mills led York into the Football League in 2012 and, just three years later, the club narrowly missed out on promotion to League One.

The possibility of life in the sixth tier of English football is now one the club's supporters dare not even imagine.

"We are where we are - and there are reasons for all of that - but getting out of it will be an incredible achievement from this group of players," said Mills.

"Since I have been here, we have had to deal with so much," he reflected. "So we are not going to let one week, take away all the hard work we have put in.

"You can't put into words what this games means. It's not just about tomorrow, it's about a whole season, what you have been through and all the emotions that go with that.

"And more importantly going forward as a football club. We know what's at stake. When we do it on Saturday, it's going to feel even better!" he said.

The Minstermen were 19th in the table when Mills returned in October to replace Jackie McNamara as manager.

He completely overhauled the club's squad during his first three months in charge and York would be sitting ninth if the league table was based purely on results since January 1.

"That proves what these players have done," he said. "I think we have taken 20 points from the last 11 games and any team that gets two points a game is promotion material.

"It shows how far behind we were and I don't just mean points wise! I mean as a football club in who we are, what we are, what we believe we can do, the disciplines, and the pride of the club.

"We have brought that back to an extent," he said. "And that's why, when the game finishes on Saturday, if we have done it, I might just go loopy. Warn the fans that anything could happen. I hope that's the case and I hope they go loopy with me."

Opponents Forest Green Rovers have already booked a play-off spot and will be playing fourth placed Dagenham and Redbridge in the semifinals next week.

However, they still need victory tomorrow to secure third place which brings home advantage in the second leg of the semifinal.

Mills said: "They know they are in the play-offs and could just play with freedom and no pressure. But how much does playing at home in the second leg of the play-offs mean to them? I think it means a little bit and they will want to finish third.

"Forest Green have had a good season and are a team that people thought might win the league. It's going to be a tough game for many reasons."

The Minstermen will be boosted by the return of defender Yan Klukowski who has been sidelined with calf trouble for over a month. His return would give Mills the option to move Sean Newton into midfield.

Tomorrow's game, which is being shown live on BT Sport, kicks-off at 12.15pm. Tickets are still available from Bootham Crescent.
