YOU wait four months for a substitute to score a goal and then two net in the space of six sensational minutes.

In the land of London buses, York City left it late before second-half replacements Scott Fenwick and Yan Klukowski snatched an unlikely point at Sutton.

Their efforts, clocked at 89 and 95 minutes, represented the first time anybody had climbed off the Minstermen’s bench to hit the target since Callum Rzonca rattled in his only senior goal during November’s 1-1 home draw with Guiseley.

Both players had been thrown on as part of a triple substitution that also saw Aidan Connolly introduced, with the visitors trailing to Nicky Bailey’s second-half, deadlock breaker.

When Sean Newton bizarrely put though his own goal from close to the left touchline on 86 minutes, though, the reshuffle appeared about as meaningful as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

But, with City supporters’ spirits sinking, what initially looked a consolation header from Fenwick precipitated a grandstand finish that was crowned by Klukowski’s majestic free kick.

It was truly breath-taking stuff.

For long periods, though, the contest had been a turgid affair and you would have got much shorter odds on the game ending 0-0 than the 8-1 snapped up by punters last month for former reserve keeper Wayne Shaw’s pie-eating antics.

Sutton’s current first-choice between the sticks – on-loan net-minder Will Puddy – made the only two saves of the first half, gathering Vadaine Oliver’s edge-of-the-box effort from a long kick forward by Kyle Lethern before Newton curled a free kick into his arms.

He wasn’t fully extended on either occasion, but should have been at least tested and probably given no chance when Oliver squandered the best chance of the first 45 minutes, midway through the half.

The City striker was allowed to charge unopposed to meet Alex Whittle’s left-wing cross, but his header from five yards out bounced wide of the far post.

Jon Parkin had earlier diverted Newton’s firmly-driven centre from the left on to the crossbar, but was flagged offside and the 35-year-old veteran also almost uprooted a corner flag with an ambitious attempt from close to the halfway line.

At the other end, City skipper Simon Heslop survived strong penalty appeals when he bumped into Kieron Cadogan, while Bedsente Gomis, Jack Jebb, Adam Coombes, Jamie Collins and Dean Beckwith all failed to force a save with unconvincing attempts before the break.

Letheren’s first stop came on 55 minutes, but was only a routine catch following Coombes’ athletic overhead kick.

As the game continued to meander, Adriano Moke’s firmly-struck, half-volley from the edge of the box was well held by Puddy before Bailey made the breakthrough on 74 minutes.

Cadogan’s cross from the left was headed out by Newton but Bailey fired a first-time strike into Letheren’s bottom-right corner, with the ball gathering pace off the heavily-watered 3G surface on its way to hitting the back of the net.

Moments later, Heslop prevented his side from conceding a swift second, clearing Kevin Amankwaah’s header off the line following Coombes’ delivery from the left.

But, after Coombes shot over on the turn from ten yards, Newton did the home striker’s job for him when he inadvisedly put his foot well and truly through a back pass and the ball again skidded into the same bottom corner found by Bailey.

Nobody dared to really hope from the unsegregated City following when Fenwick went on to glance a near-post header past Puddy from Klukowski’s left-wing corner, which had been earned by Amari Morgan-Smith’s persistence.

But, when the same player brushed the top of the netting after winning another aerial ball from a flag kick, the scene was set for a thrilling finale.

Oliver subsequently won a free kick 25 yards from goal and, after sizing up his options, Klukowski belted the ball into Puddy’s top-left corner, sparking off ecstatic celebrations from the City faithful, dotted all around Gander Green Lane.
