YORK City were held to a 1-1 FA Cup fourth qualifying round draw by National League North part-timers Curzon Ashton.

The Minstermen took an early lead through Richard Brodie’s penalty but Niall Cummins replied for the Manchester outfit.

In another lacklustre display, the hosts could not manage a single shot on target all afternoon other than Brodie’s goal and the two teams will now meet in a Monday night replay at the Tameside Stadium.

Clovis Kamdjo made an early block for the Minstermen to deflect Cummins’ six-yard effort over before Brodie opened the scoring on nine minutes.

The City striker released Shaun Rooney for a clear run on goal and, after the former Dunfermline defender pushed the ball to keeper Hakan Burton’s right, he was brought down for a penalty.

Burton was booked and Brodie made no mistake from the spot, placing his attempt firmly to Burton’s right.

The visitors responded positively, though, as Jordon Wright blazed over with an angled effort while, for City, Rooney headed too high from Sam Fielding’s free kick and a sliding Jack Higgins prodded wide after Danny Galbraith’s cross.

But the hosts were indebted to keeper Kyle Letheren moments later when he made a smart save down to his right from Joe Guest’s 15-yard drive after Simon Heslop had been played a difficult ball in his own half from Kamdjo and lost possession.

The warning was not heeded and the Nash drew level on 28 minutes when Guest was given time to send a low cross in from the left that travelled right across face of the six-yard box for Cummins to squeeze in a shot past Letheren from a tight angle at the far post, Wright went on to lift an ambitious 35-yard effort over and, after Brodie’s edge-of-the-box, half-volley bounced wide, Luke Clark and James Baillie also aimed too high from distance.

In first-half stoppage time, Brodie then headed wide from an inviting Lanre Oyebanjo cross, but was flagged offside. After the break, Baillie’s 20-yard shot on the turn did not extend Letheren whilst, at the other end, Heslop drilled just wide from a similar distance after sub Kaine Felix had combined with Brodie.

Galbraith also stabbed off target from 12 yards and Matty Dixon dragged a hopeful attempt wide, but Guest also curled a corner against the outside of Letheren’s near post City were continuing to feed off scraps with Higgins heading wide of the near post from a long Oyebanjo throw before Daniel Nti blazed over from a promising position after Felix had chased down Heslop’s searching ball down the right.

Letheren had to be alert again, though, on 79 minutes when he pushed Cummins’ downward header around his near post after Ryan Hall’s excellent deep cross from the left.

A fine block by Kamdjo also blocked Baillie’s goalbound drive after the Ashton winger had skipped past Higgins, before City were denied a stoppage-time penalty when Chris Rowney appeared to handle Dixon's cross.

Anything less than a draw would have been a travesty, though, for the former church team.
