CELEBRITY York City supporters Guy Mowbray and Richard Herring have joined the legions expressing their astonishment at this week’s club statement.

They have also levelled their dismay at the club’s fortunes following manager Jackie McNamara’s announcement that, following the 6-1 midweek debacle at win-less Guiseley, he will only tender his resignation if the team fail to get a “positive result” at Braintree.

Delivering his reaction on Twitter, Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray, who used to cover City games for Minster FM in the 1990s, said: “I’m sorry, but this (is) just another embarrassment to heap on top of all the others.”

Mowbray, who attends City games when his work commitments allow, watched the calamity unfold at Guiseley and, using the social media side again, posted: “Night off, so came to Guiseley. Now witnessing the lowest point in York City’s history.”

Comedian Herring, meanwhile, tweeted “You know, cos losing 6-1 against the bottom team who haven’t won all season isn’t enough of a clue,” in response to McNamara’s self-imposed ultimatum and, querying the definition of a “positive result”, added: “4-0 loss would be a positive result given recent displays. More weirdness at ycfc.”

He also quipped “It’s like nothing is working” following a club announcement that the telephone lines were down on Wednesday morning, having earlier pronounced: “Even Jeremy Corbyn can’t believe that Jackie McNamara hasn’t quit.”

Herring, of double-act Lee and Herring, followed events at Guiseley too, joking; “C’mon York! Great escape time. You can get dozens in the goal while the floodlights are out” in reference to the hour-long delay due to floodlit failure with City trailing 4-1 after 41 minutes.

The statement, described as one of the most oddest released by a football club all season by Match of the Day 2 presenter Mark Chapman, also prompted former England and Manchester United defender Phil Neville to comment “Let’s hope you win then!” on Twitter, where Channel Five’s Football League Show pundit Adam Virgo posted: “The York City chairman makes Donald Trump look a genius. Strange statement from the club today (on) McNamara future. They just lost 6-1.”

The Minstermen’s 2012 double Wembley-winning squad member Jon Challinor, meanwhile, tweeted: “Such a shame. You’re destroying everything we achieved.”
