YORK City boss Jackie McNamara has revealed that it was his own decision to give himself one match to save his job with a “positive result”.

The Minstermen will travel to Braintree on Saturday with McNamara’s self-imposed ultimatum to meet in an effort to secure a first away victory during the ex-Dundee United and Partick chief’s 11-month tenure.

It is still not clear what would constitute a “positive result,” but, on the reasons for making the statement, McNamara said on Radio Five Live: “I decided on it (the statement).

“Results are very important in any league and, when you’re not winning games, it gives the chance for people to have a pop at you about all sorts of things. Results haven’t been good enough but I want to stand up and fight and try to change things.

“I’ll take responsibility if it doesn’t work out. I brought players in over the summer, so it’s my fault and we’ll see if the players want me to stay or want somebody else to come in, so Saturday’s game is an important one.

“I wanted to try and help the club as well, rather than walking straight away (after the Guiseley defeat). I spoke with the chairman the morning after the game and I’ve decided that, if I can’t get a result, it’s maybe better somebody else comes in as a fresh face and maybe they will get the support of the fans and different things to give the club the chance to move up the league.”

City defeated FA Youth Cup second qualifying round opponents Garforth Town 6-0, meanwhile, at Bootham Crescent.

Substitute Reece Breslin bagged a brace, while Tyler Walton, Sam Fielding, Alex Brutton and Josh Berry joined him on the scoresheet.

The Minstermen have also confirmed that their FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie at home to National League North strugglers Curzon Ashton has been confirmed for Saturday, October 15, kick-off 3pm.

Tickets for the game have been reduced to £12 for adults, £6 for concessions and free for under-five supporters.

Should a replay be required, it will be played on Monday, October 17 at Curzon’s 4,000-capacity Tameside Stadium in Manchester’s Ashton-under-Lyne.
