SHAUN Rooney has been warned that his indiscipline might cost him his place in the York City team after he serves a one-match ban.

The former Dunfermline and Queen’s Park right back is suspended for Saturday’s National League home clash with Dover having already been cautioned five times this season.

Rooney, along with fellow full-back Alex Whittle, was one of two ever-presents in City’s squad this term, but Bootham Crescent chief Jackie McNamara will be choosing between Ben Clappison or Josh Robinson in the defensive slot against Dover.

Despite both players being recognised centre halves, McNamara will then decide whether the performance of the selected replacement merits keeping 20-year-old Rooney on the sidelines for a longer spell.

The City boss said: “Shaun needs to learn bookings are important, especially at this stage of the season. Josh Robinson or Ben Clappison could now give me a decision to make for the following week.

“They have both played there before – Ben more than Josh. They both want to play centre half, but this will be a chance for one of them to get in the team and stay there if they do well.”

With Lanre Oyebanjo having still not started full training following his calf injury, McNamara had initially considered fit-again midfielder Clovis Kamdjo as another potential makeshift right back, but has now decided against that option, reasoning: “I’m not really in favour of that.

“Clovis can play at centre half or in front of the back four, but right back might be asking a bit too much.”

McNamara is also hoping that Aidan Connolly will have recovered from the tight hamstring that saw him miss Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Tranmere, as well as the whole second half of last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Torquay.

But on-loan Sheffield United striker Jake Wright will not feature following the clash with Tranmere defender Liam Ridehalgh that saw him stretchered off after an hour of Tuesday’s game.

“Jake might be back for Barrow next week,” McNamara added. “He took a bad kick on the side of his shin and calf muscle and I thought the challenge was worse than the one against Richard Brodie for their red card.”
