YORK City’s new loan signing Jake Wright reckons his “rough-and-tumble” approach will be well suited to National League football.

Wright, 19, has played for Hallam and Ilkeston in the Northern Counties East League and Evo-Stik League respectively during previous spells away from parent club Sheffield United.

He made his professional debut, meanwhile, as a 73rd-minute substitute during the Minstermen’s 6-1 defeat at Gateshead on Tuesday night.

Having being introduced with the hosts leading 2-1, Wright's chances to impress were limited as Jackie McNamara’s men capitulated, but the Manchester-born forward still gained valuable experience of what lies in store during an initial one-month stint at the highest echelon of non-League football and has not been intimidated.

In fact, he is ready to give as good as he takes, saying: “I had one or two touches but nothing much, because we were under cosh for those 20 minutes.

“It gave me a taste of what to expect though. It will be physical and a level where everyone is competitive because they want to get in the Football League.

“The under-23s football I’ve been playing can be quite false, because it’s still about development and learning the game. You get a lot of time on the ball whereas, in this league, the tempo is a lot higher, as are the physical demands.

“You take a touch and somebody comes through you, or you’ve got two or three players pressing you to try and win possession so, hopefully, that will improve my speed of thought and touch, because I won’t get as many touches on the ball. I also like the physical side of the game.

“People who have seen me play know I’ve got a bit of a streak. I like a bit of rough and tumble and causing a few issues.

“Sometimes, that might become a bit too much, but it’s just about channelling it.”

Wright plundered 14 goals for Hallam in seven outings and is now hoping to prove himself as a potent marksman five tiers above with the Minstermen.

He added: “Both loan spells I’ve had were good. I need a first-team football portfolio and that’s what I got at both clubs.

“I’d just turned 18 when I went to Hallam and I did quite well before getting a few games at Ilkeston too. I’ll be taking everything game-by-game here, but the plan is to take my goalscoring form with Hallam into this loan.

“That might happen, or it might not, but I will be giving 100 per cent to try and make sure it does, because I like running in behind defences and will never give up. I’ll go after anything until I’ve taken my last breath and I’m quite a natural finisher, who has scored quite a few goals in my short career.”

On the area of his game that might need greater attention, meanwhile, Wright admitted: “I need to work on my hold-up play and reading the game in terms of using my body and predicting where the first and second balls are going to drop.”

Wright is now preparing for the long journey to Forest Green as he completes a whirlwind week that started with a 2-1 under-23s victory for Sheffield United against Ipswich before he featured for City at Gateshead the following day.

On the nature of his move and his ambitions, Wright explained: “It all came about quite quickly. I got a text after the under-23s game telling me to go down to York and sign terms there and I’m really excited when I think of what lies ahead of me in the next month.

“This is a big opportunity for me at such a big club and I just want to do well for the team, score some goals, help York get as high up the league as possible and, then, go back to Sheffield United with positive feedback.”
