WEMBLEY hero Lanre Oyebanjo is back at York City with the view to being offered a contract at Bootham Crescent.

Oyebanjo, 26, is available for transfer after two seasons with Sky Bet League Two Crawley, whom he joined from the Minstermen in 2014.

City physio Jeff Miller is now assessing the Hackney-born right back’s physical condition following an injury-ravaged campaign with Crawley last term.

He also picked up a knee problem during a friendly appearance for the Sussex side against Three Bridges on Tuesday, ruling him out of playing for Jackie McNamara’s team during tomorrow’s pre-season friendly at Stalybridge Celtic, kick-off 3pm.

Former West Ham academy player Oyebanjo joined City from Histon in 2011 and went on to be a vital member of the squad that enjoyed a glorious double-winning Wembley campaign, scoring in the FA Trophy final against Newport and starring against Luton in the play-off triumph eight days later.

A timely return from injury also proved influential as the Minstermen staved off the threat of relegation during their first season back in the Football League and he went on to form part of the miserly defence that steered the club into the play-offs under Nigel Worthington the following season, before leaving for Crawley.

Oyebanjo played 36 matches as the Red Devils were relegated from League One, but was limited to just seven outings – all in March and April - during the last campaign.

On the possibility of Oyebanjo pulling on City colours again, McNamara said: “We are speaking to Lanre and he’s with us now.

“He played for Crawley the other night and scored, but also hurt his knee, so he is being monitored by Jeff. I don’t think he will be fit to play for a week or ten days, but we are seeing if he’s OK on the medical side and, then, we’ll see if we can get something done.

“All being well, we will do because we need a bit of competition on that side.”

McNamara added that City will not be pursuing an interest in trialist goalkeepers Ed Wilczynski and Michael Quinn, declaring: “We’re going to pursue something else.”

The Bootham Crescent boss also revealed that Harrogate Town’s England C international shot-stopper Peter Crook had been earmarked as a potential target, but he has been offered a trial at Premier League Burnley and the Wetherby Road outfit are looking for a fee for his signature.

“He’s somebody who was on the radar, but it’s not realistic for us to get him,” McNamara explained.

Midfielder Matty Dixon, meanwhile, has joined Ben Barber (hamstring) and Callum Rzonca (shoulder) on the sidelines after suffering a thigh injury that is expected to rule him out for ten days.

All three will be missing at Stalybridge, where McNamara is forecasting a very different test to that presented by Middlesbrough during last weekend’s 6-0 defeat.

“It’s another game to get more fitness in and the lads are all coming on after another really, tough week for them,” the City chief said. “I’m expecting a physical game with all the things that we can expect next season.

“It won’t be like last Saturday, when Middlesbrough were controlling possession and I want to see how we adapt to that as a team.”

Elsewhere in the National League, Woking have signed former Wycombe midfielder Max Kretzschmar.
