Trialist goalkeeper Ed Wilczynski expected to feature for York City against Middlesbrough

The 21-yearold shot stopper, who was released by Huddersfield at the end of last term, also played a half against his old club for the Minstermen’s National League rivals Guiseley this week.

City chief Jackie McNamara said: “Scotty’s obviously number one but we need at least another one or two to push him and Ed might play a little bit of the game.”

Former Barcelona and Spain net-minder Victor Valdes, meanwhile, might be in the opposition goal.

Valdes has completed a free transfer move from Manchester United to Boro, who are understood to be bringing their first-team squad to Bootham Crescent.

“I expect them to be quite strong and, the better players they bring, the better it is for us, because everybody wants to test themselves,” McNamara reasoned. “We’ll be trying to give everybody game time, which might mean some playing out of position.

Some will play 45 minutes and some a bit more and we want to see how they react to games, each other and, most importantly, where they are fitness wise. We will be getting to know the players in pre-season, looking at different systems and finding out what’s our strongest team.”

Transfer-listed striker Vadaine Oliver will play no part in the game, while Ben Barber (hamstring) and Callum Rzonca (shoulder) are both ruled out with injury.
