YORK City academy manager Andy McMillan has been asked to reapply for his job at Bootham Crescent.

The club legend, second only to Barry Jackson in the all-time appearances list on 492 and a 1993 Wembley hero, will be considered for a role that has been advertised on City’s official website with Friday the closing date for candidates.

But Minstermen chief Jackie McNamara has suggested the successful applicant will need to be prepared for a position that will be more administrative, than coaching based.

He said: “The roles have changed in the academy, with everything else that has happened. Adie Costello was doing a lot of the administration stuff before he left and we’re looking at that.

“We need to see if that side of things is what Andy (McMillan) would be interested in moving forward and see if there are other people who would want to come in.”

McNamara has previously questioned the academy’s success rate in recent times.

The under-18 team finished bottom of the Football League Youth Alliance’s north-east division last season, but were without prize graduate Ben Godfrey, who was named League Two Apprentice of the Year following a move to Norwich that netted the Minstermen a six-figure sum that could rise to £1million if he meets his full potential.

Youth-team pair Nick Kennedy and Tyler Walton have also signed full-time contracts for next season and last term’s first-year pro Callum Rzonca has been offered a contract extension.

Further down the age groups, under-16s keeper Ryan Whitley continues to be monitored by Manchester City and England, while under-14 striker Cole Kiernan has been snapped up by Premier League Sunderland for an expected five-figure fee that will be decided by tribunal.

McMillan returned to Bootham Crescent as academy manager in May 2014 having worked in youth coaching at Hull City, Lincoln, Barnet and Notts County after spending 11-and-a-half years as a Minstermen player between 1987 and 1999.

But McNamara has suggested that McMillan’s affinity with the club will not play any part in his continued employment, adding: “We will be picking the best person for the job and Andy has got to want it as well, because the role will be changing a little bit.”

The Press understand that McNamara will meet the club’s academy coaches this evening to discuss the reasons behind the planned restructuring of the academy.
