SKY Bet League 2 side Carlisle have signed midfielder Russell Penn on a one-year deal from York, subject to paperwork clearance.
Penn, 30, has spent tie with Birmingham, Kidderminster, and Scunthorpe before joining York where he was made captain but his contract ran out at the end of the season.
The Cumbrian's head of recruitment Lee Dykes told the official website: "He's another player we've watched for a while and he ticks a lot of good boxes.
"He's a vastly experienced midfielder and very good professional who knows the level inside out. When you're looking for competition for places he will certainly provide that.
"The managers at the clubs he has been with have trusted him with the captain's armband and there are very solid reasons for that. He can play, he can add a bit of grit and he encourages those around him to do the right things.
"We're looking forward to working with him as he takes on this next challenge in his career."
