VICTORY at Morecambe’s Globe Arena would not have made a world of difference at the end of a sorry season.

But it might have at least given some reward for York City’s long-suffering travelling supporters.

Instead, the Minstermen faithful, who have covered more than 7,500 miles on the road since the club’s last away victory on September 5, watched their team surrender yet another winning position.

Jamie Devitt’s equaliser cancelled out midfielder Luke Summerfield’s eighth goal of the season in first-half stoppage time to make it 30 points tossed away after the Football League’s bottom team have taken the lead this term.

Had their side been able to hold on to just a third of those points, then City supporters would not now be preparing for 2016/17 trips to Barrow, Bromley and Boreham Wood.

Making their views of this crop of players clear, chants of “We’ve Got Our Best Player in the Stand” rang out of the away end, as possible summer transfer target and former favourite Richard Brodie watched on with them, while posing for selfies.

Vadaine Oliver’s second-half introduction, meanwhile, prompted a chorus of boos that were repeated for his first few touches on the ball.

Manager Jackie McNamara did not escape the supporters’ ire either, although the calls for his dismissal were a little less forceful than those heard at Bootham Crescent during the previous weekend’s 4-1 home defeat to Bristol Rovers.

The game itself was typical of two teams with Sky Bet League Two’s worst defensive records.

Only four top-drawer saves from recalled keeper Michael Ingham prevented City from a final-day defeat whilst, at the other end, Josh Carson was guilty of two glaring misses with Bradley Fewster and Kenny McEvoy also profligate in front of goal.

McEvoy might have earlier won his team a penalty but, after hurdling a reckless Lee Molyneux challenge, referee Ross Joyce waved away all demands for a spot kick.

At the other end, Kevin Ellison dragged a 25-yard chance wide and ex-Minsterman Shaun Miller fired over from an acute angle after Summerfield had been crowded out and robbed of possession in his own half.

Summerfield’s curling free kick was then comfortably gathered by Barry Roche before Ingham came to his side’s rescue for the first time, charging off his line quickly to smother Aaron Wildig’s shot after an underhit back pass from Dave Winfield.

A Molyneux free kick went on to deflect over off the City wall before Carson blasted over from eight yards with the goal at his mercy after a stretching Summerfield could only get his toe to a pull back from the right byline by Lewis Alessandra.

Ingham was called into action again on 44 minutes, tipping over a dipping, 20-yard attempt by Wildig and the visitors forged in front from the next attack.

After exchanging passes with fellow midfielder James Berrett, Summerfield strode into the penalty box before directing a deliberate sidefooted shot into Roche’s bottom-left corner from 15 yards.

Scott Bennett was still required to make a last-ditch challenge on Miller, though, to ensure City were still on terms at the break.

Moments into the restart, Alessandra headed over from eight yards after Carson had strained every neck muscle to meet McEvoy’s deep right-wing cross to the far post.

But Devitt levelled on 51 minutes when he picked the ball up on the edge of the visitors’ box and unleashed a spectacular shot on the turn that thudded in off the underside of Ingham’s crossbar.

The former Northern Ireland international went on to deny Wildig for a third time shortly afterwards, charging out to save after the Morecambe midfielder tried to beat him with the outside of his boot after racing on to Miller’s ball through the left channel.

As the game opened up, Alessandra drilled wide after cutting in from the left flank and Alan Goodall’s low 30-yard drive was safely gathered by Ingham before Devitt fired narrowly over from a similar distance.

City went on to waste two simple openings to restore their advantage in as many minutes.

First, Roche rushed out to end Alessandra’s charge through the left channel after Summerfield had spotted his run with a fine diagonal ball.

The ball then broke loose to Fewster, whose shot was blocked on the line by Molyneux before Carson, following up, screwed his shot wide from eight yards.

Next, McEvoy somehow contrived to miss the target from a couple of yards in front of a gaping goal following Carson’s low cross from the left.

A sliding Oliver went on to find the sidenetting from another right-wing delivery to the far post by McEvoy on 68 minutes before the visitors ran out of steam and failed to muster another goal attempt.

At the other end, substitutes Cole Stockton and Paul Mullin pepped up the hosts’ attack.

Stockton fired narrowly over from 25 yards and Mullin skied a half-volley against the roof of the stand with only Ingham to beat.

The City keeper went on to get his fingertips to an edge-of-the-box Mullin drive in stoppage time but he could not save his side from setting a new club record low of just seven victories in a league campaign.

A final haul of 34 points, meanwhile, was just one better than the Minstermen’s worst-ever tally, including when the two-points-for-a-win era is converted to the modern format.

That lowest amount, however, was recorded in the division above by Bobby Saxton’s 1987/88 strugglers.
