YORK City will not be held to ransom by close-season transfer targets.

Manager Russ Wilcox remains in negotiations with potential new players, including a striker, ahead of the new Sky Bet League Two campaign but will not pay over the odds for anybody's services.

Wilcox would also like to tie up any more deals next week, with the Minstermen squad due to report to Bootham Crescent for a testing day on Thursday.

The official start to pre-season training will then be seven days later and the City boss said: "We are still in negotiations with players but some are asking for things that we're not prepared to do.

"The chairman does not want to pay out more than we should do and that's the right policy. I will be looking for answers next week, though, as ideally we would like any more signings in for the testing day."

City have recruited three players since the end of last season, with Vadaine Oliver, George Swan and James Berrett - the latter subject to a successful medical next week - having agreed terms.

Dan Parslow, Ryan Jarvis, Lewis Montrose and Wes Fletcher, meanwhile, have left Bootham Crescent and on-loan quintet Bobby Olejnik, Stephane Zubar, Brad Halliday, Shaun Miller and Josh O'Hanlon all returned to their parent clubs in May.

Elsewhere, relegated Yeovil - who will visit North Yorkshire in August - have signed Marc Laird from Tranmere. Crawley, who also went down from League One last term, have snapped up midfielder Simon Walton and defender Joe McNerny from Stevenage and Woking respectively.
