YORK City boss Russ Wilcox is aiming to plot the downfall of cup kings Bradford City.

The Minstermen manager was absolutely thrilled after learning the League One Bantams would be visiting Bootham Crescent in the Capital One Cup first round, with the tie to be played in the week beginning August 10.

The first ever League Cup finalists from the fourth tier of English football, when they beat Arsenal on the road to Wembley before falling 5-0 to Swansea in the showpiece game two years ago, Bradford have become renowned for their knockout exploits - recovering from 2-0 down to beat Premier League champions Chelsea 4-2 in the FA Cup at Stamford Bridge last season.

But Wilcox, buoyed by the home draw and the expectation of a big crowd, said it was important the club made progress in the competition. York have lost nine consecutive first-round ties in the League Cup's various different guises since enjoying a 3-2 aggregate triumph over Port Vale in 1997.

He said: "I am delighted. First and foremost, you would like a home draw and we have got that. It's against Bradford City, who are just down the road, and they will bring plenty of support. It is all set up to be a cracking night.

"It is important to try and do well in the cups. We haven't done that in the last few years and what that does is bring positivity to the players as well as much needed finance to the club.

"It's a very important game. Interestingly, we have tried really hard to get Bradford City in pre-season. We didn't quite manage it between Phil Parkinson and me so it is a really interesting draw that we do now get to play each other."

With Wilcox working hard to make inroads in the transfer market, as he bids to improve on York's 18th place finish in League Two last season, he also said the game - and a possible cup run - could have a significant benefit to club coffers.

"It can make all the difference," he added. "You only have to look at Cambridge and the two ties against Manchester United. You look at what they have done this summer and, all of a sudden, they are carrying a bigger squad with more quality. It is massively important.

"Bradford have got an amazing record (in the cups). Phil has done a terrific job over the years. It brings you to the fore if you have a good cup run and everyone knows about Bradford City. It is only the first round but we are looking forward to it."

City have not met the Bantams since a League Two clash in March 2013, when the visitors won 2-0 at Bootham Crescent with goals from James Hanson and Garry Thompson. It was former manager Gary Mills' last game in charge. He was sacked an hour after the defeat.

Future City management duo Martin Foyle and Andy Porter, meanwhile, featured for Port Vale during the Minstermen's victory 18 years ago, as did ex-winger Jon McCarthy and Paul Musselwhite, who later became player/goalkeeper coach at Bootham Crescent.

City's marksmen over the two legs were Gary Bull, Steve Bushell and Tony Barrass but the club were dumped out 4-1 at Oxford in the next round. Since then, the Minstermen have succumbed to Sunderland, Wigan, Stoke, Crewe, Sheffield United, Rotherham, Doncaster (twice) and Burnley.

That last victory against Port Vale, meanwhile, had been preceded by giant-killing shocks over Everton and Manchester United during the previous two campaigns.
