YORKSHIRE One side Malton & Norton RUFC were on the receiving end of a shock in the EDF Energy Senior Vase as they were dumped out 13-8 by Wheatley Hills.

The visitors to The Gannock on Saturday are struggling for survival in Yorkshire Two but they fully deserved their victory over a Malton side which did not perform on the day.

The excuses can all be trotted out but the final analysis is that Malton were not up to the task on the day and the visitors fully deserved their round three north victory.

For 35 minutes of the first half, Malton were camped in Hills territory and enjoyed most of the possession. But all they had to show for their dominance was a solitary penalty by Matt Williams.

Malton lost fly-half Ian Cooke early in the game with a shoulder injury, but that was no excuse for some poor decision making and basic errors at important times.

The visitors drew level when Malton were penalised in the opening minutes of the second period for a high tackle, but the Malton reply was instant.

A break along the touchline by winger Ryan Lonsdale took them deep into Wheatley Hills territory before the ball was released to Andy Mitchell. Quick transfer across the backs had the visitors stretched and the final pass was taken by right winger Phil Pateman, who crossed in the corner to regain the lead.

Malton conceded a penalty for handling in a ruck and Wheatley Hills reduced the arrears.

Wheatley grew in confidence and they won a line out and swiftly moved the ball to midfield, where two missed tackles by Malton allowed the visitors to touchdown under the posts.

The conversion was successful and, with time running out, Malton had a mountain to climb.

The pack were unfortunate not to get the equalising try at the death, but that would have been an injustice to Wheatley Hills.

Selby were beaten 32-10 by high-flying hosts Sandal.

Meanwhile, in the EDF Energy Junior Vase, York RI eased through to the fifth round with a 34-32 victory at Bramley Phoenix after extra time.

Matthew Turner opened the scoring for RI when he took a short pass from Luke Harding to slice through the home defence and touch down under the posts. Ben Hobson converted.

At half-time, RI led 19-17 after further tries for full-back Manu Pate and Turner. Hobson converted Pate's try.

The sides were locked at 27-27 after 80 minutes, with Rick Lindsley scoring a try and Hobson kicking a penalty.

Turner completed his hat-trick two minutes into the first period of extra time and Hobson converted. Bramley scored with a minute remaining, but missed the conversion attempt.
