JOHN DAWES, Shane Goulding and Joe Maud all claimed tries during a 28-12 home victory for Yorkshire One leaders York against Hullensians.

The other points were kicked by George Davies, who added three penalties and two conversions against a 10th-placed visiting team fighting against relegation.

Dawes started at fly-half for York with Sam Potrykus outside him at centre while, in the forwards, Goulding was named at number eight as Maud and Lewis Hannibal made up the back row and Simon Webster started as hooker.

On a wet and soft pitch, the visitors took an early lead when York shoved a scrum forward but were penalised.

Hullensians went on to set up an effective driving maul and Ollie Dynan crossed the line with the conversion also good.

Full-back Davies responded well, kicking two penalties, with the second awarded after hard work from the forward pack, but the Humbersiders scored again when the ball was distributed wide and Josh Langford kicked through with the bounce favouring the winger.

The conversion was missed and, as the rain fell, Dawes was getting important distance on his kicks out of hand, culminating in the Clifton Park outfit’s first try under the posts when he burst through the defence.

Davies converted and then capitalised on Hull being penalised for offside with his third successful penalty kick of the game.

As half-time approached, a determined York held their line, as Simon Webster contributed an important scrum hook against the head to preserve a 16-12 advantage at the midway point.

With more rain following the restart, the second half turned into an attritional affair and, when Hannibal picked up a yellow card, the hosts showed good character to avoid conceding points during the ten minutes that he was off the pitch.

The away team were also reduced to 14 men after a yellow card and York were able to cash in with Goulding touching down after an advancing scrum.

Davies was again reliable with the conversion and victory was sealed with 15 minutes to play, as Maud scored the game’s last points, breaking out on the blind side of an attacking maul to power over the line.

The match was also notable, meanwhile, for the debuts from the bench of former Colts players Oscar Bell and Harry Taylor.

Meanwhile, Selby's attempts to escape the drop came unstuck at second-placed Beverley, with the East Yorkshire side winning 31-10 to stay 10 points behind York. Selby, who have improved of late, are eight points from safety with eight games to go.

In Yorkshire Four (south east), York RI enjoyed a 20-17 win at basement boys Sheffield Oaks, although they remain second-from-bottom.
