POCKLINGTON jumped to joint top of North One East after a wonderful weekend for the Percy Road club.

Pock were expected to win at lowly Guisborough and did so, pulling away after a close first half to complete a convincing 43-13 bonus-point victory.

Bigger bonuses followed when news came through that leaders West Hartlepool and second-placed Alnwick had both slipped to surprise defeats, to lowly Driffield and mid-table Percy Park respectively.

Pock thereby joined West Hartlepool at the summit on 55 points, below them in the table only on win ratio, with Alnwick falling four points behind alongside Penrith. Bradford & Bingley are only one point further back in a tight top five.

There was only one point in Pocklington's encounter until Jonty Peters' penalty with the last kick of the first half gave them a little breathing space at 17-13 up.

But two Ben Stephenson tries in ten minutes on the resumption put Pock in command and they powered home thereafter.

The visitors had gone ahead after just four minutes after forwards and backs combined for lock Tom Peters to touch down, younger brother Jonty converting from the touchline.

But Guisborough fielded some dangerous backs and it was end-to-end stuff throughout the first half. Pocklington got another try through full-back Jack Fletcher, but each time the home threequarters replied with well-worked tries of their own, leaving Jonty Peters' accomplished goalkicking as the difference between the sides.

Hooker Stephenson's brace of close-range tries early in the second half, both converted from wide out by Peters, changed the game.

Guisborough continued to have their moments, but they struggled to cope with Pocklington's set-piece dominance and the visitors' strength and fitness came to fore in the final quarter.

The Pock pack, with flanker Johnny Wood to the fore, softened their opponents up with a series of drives and charges up the middle.

Then the backs took over with some good offloading to send centre Jonty Peters and fly-half Joe Holbrough plunging over. Peters' only miss of the day was the last conversion as he landed seven out of eight kicks in difficult conditions.
