POCKLINGTON RUFC are getting set for a big weekend at Feathers Field.

Tomorrow they welcome former Premiership outfit West Hartlepool for a potential North One East cracker before hosting their annual sportsman's lunch the following day with former Scotland and British Lions lock Doddie Weir the main speaker.

After last weekend's disappointment - when they contrived to lose 21-19 at home to lowly Dinnington having dominated throughout - Pocklington will need a big improvement, as well as more ruthlessness, when they take on the league leaders and relative giants of this tier.

West Hartlepool have lost only once this season and lie three points clear at the summit and nine above fourth-placed Pock.

However, club spokesman Phil Gilbank says his team have "saved their best performances for the best opposition so far" this season, and with threequarters Joe Holbrough and Pete Massie back in contention after last week's late changes to the back line, "a keen contest is on the cards".

Gilbank added: "Recent clashes between the two at Pocklington have been cliffhangers. Last November, West Hartlepool sneaked it 19-18 in controversial fashion when a conversion was initially ruled out then reinstated after a half-time conference, while, in November 2013, Pocklington prevailed 14-12 but only after West Hartlepool saw a late penalty hit a post and come out."

There will be no junior games at Pocklington on Sunday as the club holds their sportsman's lunch, which will also feature a charity auction, with Pock old boy and England hooker Rob Webber, Wales duo Mike Phillips and Peter Morgan, and Ireland's Peter Stringer all donating items.

Webber, who won the last of his 16 England caps in the 2015 World Cup, broke his arm on his Premiership debut for Sale at the beginning of September, but after recovering ahead of schedule he made his home debut for them off the bench against Saracens last Sunday.

Malton & Norton also seek big improvement following their 22-17 home reverse to Durham City which dropped the Ryedale side down to third from bottom.

They face a tough run, though, starting with a trip to third-placed Alnwick tomorrow, followed by fixtures against Morpeth then West Hartlepool.

Spokesman Bill Laidler said of last week: "It was a very disappointing performance which will have to be righted before the team face the next three tough assignments."

It's a similar scenario for York in Yorkshire One, as they host North Ribblesdale looking to bounce back from defeat at Keighley.

Selby, beaten 10-7 at Ribblesdale last week, host Old Brodleians seeking points to eke away from the danger zone.

In Yorkshire Four, York RI will be hoping to likewise bounce back from defeat as they host lowly Hornsea.
