THE TRUE value of York’s victory over Beverley may not emerge until the end of the season.

Beverley are possible rivals in the battle for promotion to North One East and, before this game, they were sitting closer to the top of the Yorkshire One table.

Now, after an impressive display, Lee Denham’s boys have leapfrogged Beverley and are only two points adrift of second placed West Leeds.

With leaders Bridlington starting to pull clear of the field, the race for second spot is sure to intensify.

It was the first time that York and Beverley had played each other in several years and York wore specially designed jerseys for the game which raised over £1,000 in auction for BLESMA, a charity that supports limbless military veterans.

George Davies missed an early penalty but York took the lead after 15 minutes through Marc Benson. Davies converted to make it 7-0.

Tom Newitt found space on the wing and scored a second try for York next to the posts. Davies converted.

Beverley had a series of penalties and, after 20 minutes, the referee had to speak to York captain Chris Fox about York’s discipline.

Beverley full back Rob Smith kicked one of the penalties to make it 14-3.

York then gained a penalty after a scrum. Davies kicked home to make it 17-3.

Shortly before the interval, Eric Hall was shown a yellow card for an intentional knock on. Fox was next to pick up a card for a high tackle but Beverley failed to score.

Barney Carter scored for Beverley after an over-thrown line-out with Rob Smith kicking the conversion to make it 17-10.

Hall returned to the field and Newitt made a try-saving tackle as Beverley’s Luke Hazel threatened to go over the line.

Jack Gavin scored a converted try for Beverley ten minutes into the second-half to level the scores at 17-17.

Beverley continued to attack and, even from their own twenty-two, looked for space to kick rather than kicking to touch.

Beverley spurned good chances. They had a kickable penalty, 40 metres out, but tapped it and knocked-on. Junior Tupai was also adjudged to have passed the ball forward on another occasion.

The final 20 minutes of the game brought a string of tries.

Shane Goulding off-loaded to Neil McClure who went over and Davies converted.

As York attacked again, Newitt was in the back-line attacking from second-receiver. He was elusive, found space and ran through a gap in Beverley’s defence to score. Davies converted for 31-17.

Tupai was guilty of ‘mouthing off’ to the referee as Beverley prepared to re-start the game and was shown a yellow card.

York received a penalty, Sam Forbes attacked, and Lewis Hannibal scored against a dispirited Beverley defence. Davies missed the conversion to leave it 36-17.

Fox off-loaded the ball to Goulding who, again, was able to break the defensive line.

Space was created and Josh Parker ran in from the 22 to score under the posts. Davies converted and it was 43-17.

Hazel scored for Beverley in the corner but the conversion was missed.

Sam Forbes made a good defensive tackle for York as Beverley attacked with only five minutes remaining.

Will Atkin scored in the corner after a steady York scrum.

Davies converted yet again to give York a 28-point lead.

Davies and Goulding attacked again for York but the final try of the game went to Beverley winger Jacob Holmes.

The conversion was kicked leaving the final score at York 50 Beverley 29.
