SELBY'S relegation fate in Yorkshire One will be decided in the final round of regular league matches next Saturday following their 25-18 defeat at Yarnbury.

They are two points above Old Crossleyans, who are in the highest of the two relegation places, with Selby at home to sixth-placed Scarborough, while Crocs have a Halifax derby at home to fifth-placed Old Brodleians.

Scott Hunt returned at fly half for Selby in place of the injured Will Edwards, but they trailed 10-0 after 18 minutes.

As if that was not enough, Selby then lost flanker Matthew Wood – outstanding in their two previous league matches – injured, being replaced by Ashley Parkinson.

The Leeds hosts added a second try before half-time, but Selby failed to trouble the scorers, despite having 15 minutes of pressure.

Young Sam Pocklington replaced Andrew McLoughlin during the interval, and Selby were rewarded a minute into the second half when Hunt kicked a penalty after Yarnbury were offside at the kick-off.

But the visitors blew a golden opportunity in the 59th minute, Millar McCoys's break deserving a better fate than dropping the ball near the line after Pocklington provided the link.

Yarnbury added a 71st-minute penalty but Selby salvaged a losing bonus point via tries by leading try scorer Duncan Hardy and, with the last play of the match, speedy centre Alex Hare, with a converted Yarnbury try sandwiching those scores.
