SEVENTH-placed York showed the progress they are making under head coach Lee Denham and assistant Ian Thomson with their 39-30 victory at Hullensians, who have been in the top four of Yorkshire Division One all season.

The lead changed hands eight times and right winger Tom Newitt scored four tries for the visitors, who, if their discipline is improved, will win matches even more easily.

Hull had first use of a stiff breeze blowing downfield but trailed 21-20 at half-time, with Newitt capitalising on breaks by Neil McClure and Toby Atkin to bag tries, with the latter getting the other after being fed by No 8 Marcus Britland from a scrum.

Jon Dawes converted all three, and York only conceded two tries in the second half, although the first gave the hosts a 25-24 lead.

Dawes had already made it 24-20 with a 38-metre penalty after Hull had illegally slowed the ball down at the breakdown, and he landed another penalty, as well as converting Newitt's hat-trick try after sustained pressure had led to another Atkin break.

Newitt's fourth try, which made it 36-25, came from three forward drives, an Atkin box kick and quick hands.

At the bottom, Selby notched a crucial 12-8 win at basement boys West Park Leeds to put themselves five points above a demotion berth with three matches left.

It was Selby's first league win on the road this season, and was achieved with the returning duo of skipper Sam Weller and Iain Adamson at centre, while back-rower Matthew Wood returned for Charles Grey.

It was a must-win game for both teams, but Selby conceded six penalties in the first 14 minutes, going 3-0 behind.

Selby went ahead in time added on at the end of the first half when impressive flanker Matthew Wood secured line-put ball for a 20-metre drive to put prop Duncan Hardy over for his eighth try of the season.

However, the visitors were caught cold at the start of the second half to trail 8-5.

Selby's response was good though, left winger James Robinson being tripped in the act of scoring a try, the referee turning that into a penalty try for Edwards to convert.

Stout defending then kept the visitors' line intact but they bossed the final ten minutes, dropping the ball inches short of the line on the stroke of full-time.

Selby will need to be at their best, however, on Saturday as they host in-form Bridlington.

In North One East, mid-table Pocklington lost 20-5 at fourth-placed West Hartlepool, while in Yorkshire Division Four, seventh-placed York RI had the worst 40 minutes of their season in trailing 26-5 at Wensleydale on the way to a 38-10 defeat, Tom Greaves getting one of RI's two tries.
