A REJUVENATED York RUFC beat Malton & Norton 11-10 at the Gannock following a dramatic last few minutes in Yorkshire One.

A late Jon Dawes penalty sealed the win for the Clifton Parkers in the first derby match of the season.

Malton took the lead after three minutes when, after York were caught offside, full-back Zweli Sodlada converted the penalty.

York replied with some urgency and, when scrum-half Ben Johnson chipped over from a ruck, full-back Dawes won the foot race and just got his fingertips to the ball to touchdown.

Malton, though, would score a spectacular try.

Winning their own set scrum on their 22 metre line, they broke clear through Paul Angus, Nick Daley and Ian Cooke before finding Sodladla, who raced over for a great try.

When the ball then fell from the kicking tee as he was about to take the conversion, Sodladla quickly picked it up and drop kicked the two points to give Malt a 10-5 half-time lead.

Neither side was able to replicate their form after the break. York regrouped in the pack and got their reward on the hour mark when Dawes kicked a penalty to bring them within two points.

Then, in the last minute, Malton were penalised for ungentlemanly conduct and Dawes stepped up to hand York a brilliant win.

Pocklington chose a local derby to give their worst display for a long time - going down 26-10 at Driffield in North One East.

Despite a lack of urgency, they dominated the first half but only had a 12th minute Billy Hardy penalty to show for it.

They went down to 14 men on the half-hour, through a yellow card, and Driffield grabbed the lead with a lineout catch and drive.

Driffield's lineout drive saw them rumble over for two converted tries in the second half to pull 16 points clear before Pocklington finally woke up in the closing minutes.

Josh Britland made a 40 yard run down the right and, though he was caught in the bottom corner, the ball was shipped left where centre Josh Britton raced over.

Britton drop-kicked the conversion as Pocklington went in search of a losing bonus point at the death.

But they only succeeded in gifting Driffield an interception for their fourth try.

A young and inexperienced Selby team were robbed of a losing bonus point as a late Bradford & Bingley try gave the visitors a 22-11 victory at Sandhill Lane.

Despite a second defeat in a row for the Swans, it was a promising display from a side that, had they turned their pressure into points, might have achieved a surprise victory.

Bradford took the lead after five minutes through impressive centre Lachlan Moore and they went further in front through the same player a quarter of an hour in.

Selby reduced the arrears shortly afterwards with an Iain Adamson penalty and, after Bradford winger Ross Peltier was yellow carded for deliberate knock on, the home side took advantage on the stroke of half-time – Ben Lunt finishing off a sparkling backs move with a try in the corner as they trailed 12-8 at the break.

Selby were caught cold at the start of the second half when fly-half Nortier crossed in the corner to give his side a 17-8 lead.

Adamson missed two penalties and exerted tremendous pressure without being able to score points.

Scott Hunt’s penalty late on made the gap six points only for substitute Nick Gore to go over and give Bradford & Bingley a bonus point try.

York RI lost a hard fought game at Skipton 31-7 in Yorkshire Four.

Speedy winger Andy Brentnall went close for the New Lane side early on but Skipton built up a 17-0 lead at the break.

Soon 24-0 up, that stung the visitors into action and forward Yohan Barthelemy scored under the posts for Baptiste Briu to add the conversion.

RI were now in charge and went close a couple of times but, against the run of play, Skipton added a further try.
