HIGH-FLYING Malton & Norton RUFC kept up the pressure on Yorkshire One leaders Doncaster Phoenix with a 36-24 victory against Yarnbury.

Yarnbury exerted the early pressure through their large pack and took the lead after five minutes with a try from a clean catch and drive at a lineout.

Malton struck back in style. Scrum-half Zwelakhe Sodladla fielded a Yarnbury clearance kick in his own half and made ground before passing on to wing Ben Woodhouse, who fed full-back Sizwe Zondo.

From just inside the visitors' half, the full-back streaked away for fine try, which Sodladla converted.

On 20 minutes, Malton extended the lead when the pack edged closer and closer to the line before Rob Featherstone was credited with the touchdown.

Yarnbury had two players in the sin-bin at the start of the second period and Malton took full advantage.

At a scrum close to the line, the ball shot out and was hacked forward by a Yarnbury boot but flanker Sam Triffitt was alert enough to get the touchdown for Sodladla to convert.

The visitors put a penalty kick into the corner and another clean catch and drive was unstoppable as they crossed for a second try.

On the hour, the Malt pack made good ground and the ball broke to the blind side where winger Ian Cooke had a clear run to the line. Sodladla's conversion gave Malt a 26-10 lead.

With ten minutes left, Zondo recorded his second try of the game and then replacement wing Tom Newitt sent fly-half Nick Daley over to make it 36-10.

The final five minutes saw Yarnbury gain a bonus point with two converted tries.

Selby were forced to dig deep as they came from behind to win 30-17 at North Ribblesdale - their first away win of the Yorkshire One campaign.

The sides were locked at 10-10 at the break but the Swans trailed 17-13 heading into the final quarter before two late tries clinched the win.

Ribblesdale, protecting an unbeaten home record, started well against a Selby side shorn of six first choice backs.

Font rower Matt Spheres crossed in the first minute, but Selby full-back Josh Cruise responded with a penalty after 12 minutes, the first of his 25-point personal haul.

Selby went in front on 18 minutes when they won a lineout on the Ribblesdale 30-metre line and Cruise threw an excellent dummy and shimmied his way over the line near the posts for a straightforward conversion.

Ribb levelled at 10-10 after 31 minutes with a try from winger Angus Carr.

Selby went back in front after 48 minutes as Ribblesdale were caught offside and Cruise was on target with the penalt.

A converted try by Ethan Henare on 57 minutes put the hosts in front again, although Cruise kicked a penalty four minutes later to make it 17-16.

After a succession of five-metre scrums, the ball was spread to Cruise and he scored on 76 minutes.

The remainder of the match belonged to the Selby forwards and number eight Martin Protheroe forced his way over the line for Selby’s third try, again converted by Cruise.

York were 24-8 winners at Hullensians in Yorkshire One, their sixth win of the season putting them in fourth place.
