YORK RUFC coach Sean Bass is relishing a glut of Yorkshire One derby clashes.

The Clifton Parkers beat Scarborough 24-17 in a thrilling finish last weekend and host Selby tomorrow, while a clash with Malton & Norton awaits next month.

"There is no-one more pleased than me that Selby and Malton & Norton are in our league," he said. "To be playing all these derbies is fantastic for the area.

"Selby always bring a decent crowd and I'm looking forward to it. They are a good team with a good set of coaches and we had some right tussles with them last season. I expect it will be another one tomorrow."

Bass was delighted with the character shown by his side last Saturday as they let slip a 17-0 lead as Scarborough drew level, only for Josh Britland to grab a late match-winning try.

"We played 40 minutes of good rugby but thought we had won the game," said Bass. "It took us 39 minutes to realise we needed to do something. It showed character to pull it out of the bag."

York add Daz Rutherford to their squad of 20, which was being whittled down to 18 after final training.

Swans boss Richard Nicholson was delighted with the progress shown by his side in last weekend's 23-11 victory over Yarnbury.

"There was definitely improvement," he said. "We looked after the ball better and created good pressure, and the defence was pleasing. It was a step in the right direction.

"There is a good local rivalry between us and York. It is always tough doing there, but we are very much looking forward to it."

Selby welcome back Josh Cruise and Dan Porter, but James Blaymire is out with a rib injury.

Nicholson, meanwhile, hailed last weekend's debut display from New Zealand recruit Cody Whittaker.

"He played very well and is a goalkicker, which is another string to his bow," said the coach. "He is good back up for Josh Cruise and gives us more depth where we needed it."

Malton & Norton are aiming to get their campaign back on track against North Ribblesdale at The Gannock tomorrow in the wake of last weekend's 43-13 humbling at Middlesbrough.

Spokesman Bill Laidler said: "It was an off day all round, but there is a chance to put it right tomorrow."

The Ryedale side are forced into changes for tomorrow's game, with scrum-half Charlie Birkett ruled out for three weeks with concussion. Paul Angus is expected to switch from the wing.

Hooker James Thornton is doubtful with a back injury, so prop Nick Salisbury is on standby to move across the front row.

Hamstring injury victim Ian Cooke will be replaced at full-back by Sizwe Zondo, with Ben Woodhouse coming in on the wing.

Pocklington have picked a 22-man squad ahead of their home clash with Bradford & Bingley in North One East.

Lock James Wilkinson returns after being unavailable last week, while Karl Dukin is also included after recovering from concussion.

The club's annual vice-president's lunch will be held before the game at 1.30pm, with England hooker Rob Webber and Yorkshire president Ted Atkinson expected to attend.

There will be a raffle to raise funds to commemorate the late Alasdair Swann's 50 years service to the club as a player, coach and official.

There is no game for York RI in Yorkshire Four.
