POCKLINGTON RUFC went down to an agonising Yorkshire Two defeat at Dinnington, where the home side scored twice in stoppage time to steal a 25-24 victory.

Pocklington were down to the bare bones of a team due to injuries - they had to call off the Panthers' game after calling up a raft of second-teamers. But despite their makeshift line-up, which included Panthers second row Ed Bean playing on the wing, they stormed into a 21-point lead.

Playing with thed slope and strong wind, Pocklington went ahead in the sixth minute when flanker Alex Stuart kicked on a loose ball and won a 60-yard chase for the touchdown, Nick Bennett converting.

Centre Guy Wilson then blasted through in midfield on a 30-yard diagonal charge to the line, Bennett again converting.

The Percy Roaders maintained the momentum when lock Stew Rowley turned defence into attack, Dinnington killed the ball on the retreat, and Pocklington kicked the penalty to the corner for the pack to drive over and hooker Dave Birch to claim the touchdown, Bennett's third conversion making it 21-0.

Dinnington opened their account with a try from a wheeled scrum, before Bennett was on target with a penalty. However, Pocklington's injury-time demons appeared for the first time as Dinnington crossed in the 45th minute to make it 24-10 at the interval.

Dinnington kicked an early second-half penalty and Pocklington spent long periods pinned in their own 22. But determined defence kept Dinnington at bay, and though Pocklington lost a forward to the sin bin late in the day, they were still 11 points to the good at the end of 80 minutes.

But there were still nine minutes of stoppage time to go - as a result of the ball getting stuck in a tree - and the home forwards drove over for a converted try.

Dinnington suddenly scented victory, and though Pocklington did their utmost to hold out, the home side snatched the winning try with the last play of a long day in the 89th minute.
