SELBY RUFC opened up a three point gap at the top of Yorkshire Two after a 13-10 win at rivals West Park Leeds.

Defence was the order of the day in the driving rain and gusting wind, and there was an interesting midfield battle between West Park's ex-rugby league star James Lowes and Selby's skipper Andy Bennett.

Shane Sellers opened the scoring for Selby with a try and the visitors' defence held firm until an unfortunate ricochet from a defender put Park's stand-off on-side and he collected the ball to score under the posts. Lowes converted to give his side a 7-5 lead.

A fine Shaun Austerfield try restored Selby's lead but a Lowes penalty put West Park on level terms.

Selby just had the edge on their hosts and then, with five minutes to go, their relentless pressure told and Dan Porter kicked the winning penalty from in front of the posts.
