New Earswick All Blacks have gone from being Pennine League new boys to the ones to beat after maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season in a 44-32 defeat of previously unbeaten Elland.

Outstanding scrum-half Ben Jones led the way with an eye-opening 22 points and York City Knights academy player Lee Mapals chipped in with a hat-trick of tries at White Rose Avenue.

Visitors Elland were first off the mark with a converted try after six minutes.

But then Jones intercepted an Elland pass in his own half and raced 60 yards to score under the posts, adding the extras.

Mapals got his name on the scoresheet on ten minutes with a great individual try and Jones obliged to maximise its impact.

Three minutes later, the pendulum swung back in Elland's favour with an unconverted breakaway try.

Second-row Wayne Foster set Mapals up for his second - again converted - but Elland hit back with three tries, two converted, to go 26-18 in front. A late Jones penalty from distance made it 26-20 at half-time.

Five minutes into the second half, New Earswick were level when Jones picked out player/coach Chris Judge who went over. Jones converted.

A superb high kick by stand-off Liam Gargan saw Mapals out-jump the Elland defence for his hat-trick try but Elland took the lead 11 minutes later with a converted try in the corner.

Jones then sparked the All Blacks charge for the line with a great individual try that he converted himself.

The move of the game with four minutes to go then broke the Elland resolve. Jones had the ball in hand on the last tackle and the home defence backed off assuming a kick, but Jones passed to Judge, who in turn passed inside to winger Chris Spain. Spain then completed the move with an offload to Judge who strolled over.

Man-of-the-match Jones converted and Carl Pallister slotted over a penalty to wrap up the match.
