Selby Warriors ARLC guaranteed promotion and set themselves up for a Pennine League division three title decider at Thornhill ‘A’ on Saturday after beating Sharlston ‘A’ 38-6.

The Warriors moved to within two points of leaders Thornhill over whom they boast a better points-difference. So victory will give them back-to-back championships to add to their Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy capture.

Hooker Jason Roberts twice crossed from close in to give Selby an excellent start. Loose-forward Ryan Eades raced over – before being withdrawn at half-time with a hand injury ruling him out of the campaign finale – and flying winger Dave Makin scored for a 22-0 interval lead.

Rovers were kept back by a massive tackling effort, topped by stand-in captain and man of the match Ben Pearson.

The Warriors lost substitute second-row Zennon Horrox to the sin-bin and prop Mark Hanson to a sending-off in the second half, but still added two tries by veteran front-rower Jon Broadhurst and one for three-quarter Matt Irving.

Surefooted scrum-half Gavyn Lighthowler added five goals.

New Earswick All Blacks ‘A’ finished their division four season on a high with a 32-30 victory over promotion-seeking Ovenden ‘A’.

All Blacks fell behind before building a sizeable lead, and holding on for a victory in coach Carl Pallister’s final game in charge.

Scrum-half Carl Fernandez scored a hat-trick – spotting a gap for his first try, collecting a chip over the top by Jo Hnesh for his second, and racing 65 metres for the third – and substitute Dave Smith also crossed for a 22-12 lead just after half-time, man of the match Fernandez adding the goals.

Winger Dean Smith then scored two tries to stall a fightback.

Hooker Jack Carling excelled.
