A SUPERB day's rugby league brought York Groves ARLC runners-up spot at the annual Wyke 7s tournament.
The Terriers entered the event as one of the underdogs, with only one of the other five participating teams below them in the Pennine League structure.
Groves, whose division five season starts next month, played each team once and with one game to go had made sure of at least finishing joint-top of the table, with the top two playing off to determine the winner of the tournament.
However, the influential Julian McBride was injured early in the fourth match and would take no further part in the competition. Worse was to come in the last game of round robin when Dean Kilbride, who had already done enough to win the player-of-the-tournament award, pulled a hamstring which caused him to miss the final.
Groves met hosts Wyke in the final but were just edged out and had to settle for second spot.
