TEN-TRY New Earswick All Blacks ARLC are still setting the pace in Pennine League division one east after a 52-14 victory over Dearne Valley Bulldogs.

The home win maintained the All Blacks’ two-point lead at the top ahead of next weekend’s crunch clash with second-placed Kippax Welfare.

Dearne Valley opened the scoring with an unconverted try, but New Earswick responded in kind with centre Sam Blaney powering over.

All Blacks took the lead when prop Wayne Foster stormed through and, although Dearne Valley regained the lead with a converted try, the hosts hit back with a try by second-rower Steve Perks, converted by stand-off Max Brachen.

Dearne Valley levelled with an unconverted try but a try by hooker Jack Carling earned New Earswick a 20-14 interval lead.

The All Blacks forged further ahead when winger Jack Law crashed over in the corner before centre Chris Spain crossed, Brachen converting.

They kept the scoreboard ticking over as full-back Ben Dent went over and Brachen added the extras, and Dent’s second try made it 40-14 on the hour.

Second-rower Ian Henderson raced in under the sticks, Brachen again converting, before loose-forward Dan Wright rounded off the scoring with a try to which Brachen added his sixth conversion.

Man of the match was Carling, with good support from Blaney and scrum-half Liam Gargan.

All Blacks ‘A’ were beaten 48-16 at Ovenden ‘A’ in division four after travelling with a bare 13 players.

Coach Carl Pallister hailed the commitment, effort and attitude shown by his players.

He said: “It was always going to be a tough ask against Ovenden, but with players pulling out late the guys showed true grit.”

Try scorers for the All Blacks were Ben Cooper, Tony Secker, after a 60-yard interception run by player-coach Pallister, and Tom Sunman. Carl Fernandez kicked two goals.

Heworth ‘A’ crashed out of the CMS Yorkshire League Alliance Cup at the preliminary round stage after a 56-12 defeat by Northallerton Stallions at Catterick Garrison.

Heworth fought hard but were unable to cope with the pace and power of the home side, who fielded a number of Fijian Army-based players in their ranks.

Joel Clarke took the man of the match award for Heworth with an impressive 80-minute performance.

Young Tom Barron also excelled in his second game for the club, along with winger Tom Atkin and Jake Ripley.

Try scorers for Heworth were Dave Gardner and Joe Murphy, with Gary Watkinson adding both conversions.
