THE were victories for New Earswick All Blacks ARLC 'A' and York Lokomotive as the new Steeden North Yorkshire Invitation Cup kicked off.

All Blacks saw off Selby Warriors 32-10 and Lokos beat Catterick Crusaders 56-18 in the group stages.

For Selby, though, it was still a successful day. After folding their winter Pennine League team, the club regrouped and had more than 20 players available as they look to re-form for summer rugby.

All Blacks built a 24-0 lead before the Warriors got back into the groove but Selby were still cheered to win the second half, with tries by forward Ben Copeland and Chaz Fothergill, set up by impressive full-back Matty Perry.

Meanwhile, Heworth 'A' travelled to Sheffield Forgers for a pre-season friendly and in a high-scoring game a good team performance earned them a 46-22 victory.

The Villagers dominated the first half with four tries in the opening 23 minutes from Charlie Magill, Joe Deighton, Cameron Taylor and Jonny Jackson, who also kicked one conversion.

The hosts responded with a six-pointer to make it 18-6 at half-time.

Heworth went further ahead on 47 minutes with a try by Aaron Naismith before a spirited fightback by the Forgers saw them post three tries and two conversions inside 13 minutes to restore parity at 22-22.

The Black and Whites, however, resumed full control in the final quarter, adding second touchdowns for Deighton, Naismith and Taylor along with one by Will Ireland, all of which were goaled by Deighton to close out the match.
