HEWORTH ARLFC will look to put their season back on track tomorrow when they visit Mirfield Stags in the Yorkshire Men’s League.

The Villagers slumped to a fourth consecutive defeat last weekend when beaten 32-24 by local rivals York Acorn ‘A’. To make matters worse, it was the first time that bottom-of-the-table Acorn had avoided defeat all season.

Heworth, ironically, started the campaign in blistering form - winning four out of four and tussling with New Earswick All Blacks for top spot - but they have now lost five of the last six and dropped to fourth in the division one table.

Buoyed by last weekend’s shock victory, York Acorn ‘A’ return to action against Odsal Sedbergh.

It took eight games for Acorn to register their first win and head coach Leigh Paul-Rientoul blames the delay on the ‘lack of commitment’ from his players.

“We have been struggling to get a team out and struggling to get the lads training,” he said. “But, hopefully, the Heworth result will give a few people a kick up the backside. Maybe now, having gone away and won a local derby, they might want to do it every week?”

New Earswick All Blacks will be without six first team regulars for their game at Keighley Albion.

Player-coach Jack Stearman is among the absentees along with Dan Atkinson, Tom Barron, Sam Cooper, Ewan Coverdale, and George Hunt.

“We are missing a few because this was originally an empty weekend,” Stearman explained. “But hopefully the lads who come in will keep the winning run going.”

York Lokos Masters travel to Wakefield on Saturday to play in the prestigious Premier Sports Yorkshire Masters Festival. The annual festival at Eastmoor, which attracts teams from up and down the country, regularly draws a four figure crowd.

The Lokos will be without Great Britain scrum half Pete Maguire but welcome new signing Brent Ogilvie as a replacement. Lancashire county utility forward Dan Nightindale has also agreed to play for the Lokos at the festival which starts at 1pm.

Organisers of the York and District Representative side will unveil plans for next season at a special lunch being held at the Marriott Hotel in York on August 20. Former Great Britain and Leeds Rhinos prop Barrie McDermott will be the guest speaker and tickets cost £25. For more details contact Leigh Paul-Rientoul on 07854378293.
