HEWORTH produced their best display of the season to record a stunning 28-22 home victory over previously unbeaten league leaders Bentley in the Yorkshire Mens League division one

The Villagers led 12-6 at the break and were never behind in a pulsating second half - although the result was in doubt right until the final whistle.

There was no sign of an upset when the visitors took a 6-0 lead after four minutes through winger Shaun Jowett who tagged on the extras to his own try.

But Heworth levelled five minutes later after scrum half Ross Varley intercepted a stray pass and raced away. He was tackled just short of the line but quick hands from the 'play the ball' put winger Callum Worthington in at the corner and loose forward Joe Deighton kicked a towering touchline conversion.

On 27 minutes, hooker Dave Hayes sent substitute Tom Barron striding over the line and Deighton goaled to give the Villagers a 12-6 lead at the break.

The visitors came out for the second period in determined fashion and restored parity after only two minutes with a touchdown by second rower Ryan Craswell improved by Jowett.

It was nip and tuck for the next 15 minutes with both sides striving hard for superiority however it was Heworth who went ahead on the hour mark when Barron put second rower Marc Benson through a gap in the defence to race 40 metres for a well worked try. Deighton kicked the conversion to make it 18-12.

The hosts thought they had it in the bag, three minutes later, when Bentley failed to deal with a high kick from Deighton and centre Lewis Worthington pounced to gather the ball and out-pace the defence to touch down by the posts for Deighton to add his fourth goal.

But the Doncaster outfit were quick to respond with a long range try by full back Johnny Marshall on 67 minutes.

Heworth eased their nerves when Barron put Benson over for an unconverted score to lead 28-16.

It was still not over though as Bentley second rower Shaun Richards crossed for a Jowett goaled try after 75 minutes to reduce the deficit to six points.

In a nail biting final five minutes, it was the Villagers who held on for a famous and well deserved victory. Benson's double earned him the man of the match award closely followed by stand off Billy Sturdy and Deighton.

The two teams meet again in the return fixture at Bentley tomorrow night, 7.30pm kick off.

York Acorn suffered a fifth consecutive defeat when going down 26-10 at Kells in the National Conference League Premier Division.

Winger Matthew Woods and prop Timothy Stubbs scored Acorn's two tries with Anthony Chilton adding a goalkick.

Acorn 'A', meanwhile, enjoyed a 28-18 home victory over Siddall Academy in the Yorkshire Men's League.
