A HAT-TRICK by loose-forward Joe Deighton helped Heworth record their second successive Yorkshire Men's League division one victory.

The Villagers saw off King Cross Park 30-16 in an entertaining contest at Elmpark Way, with former Featherstone Rovers academy starlet Deighton ending with 22 points in all.

They led 16-10 at the break and, despite a spirited effort from the visitors, they maintained their superiority in the second period.

The Halifax outfit were first on the scoreboard after nine minutes with an unconverted try by full-back Callum Dunne.

Deighton's first try, off a defence-splitting pass by player-coach George Elliott, levelled matters five minutes later, his attempted conversion bouncing back off the crossbar.

On 21 minutes the hosts went in front when Elliott intercepted a stray King Cross pass and raced 40 metres to the posts for Deighton to add the extras.

The lead immediately increased as Elliott broke through and put Deighton over for his second try which he also goaled.

Ten minutes from the break the visitors reduced the deficit with a touchdown by winger Liam Calvert, converted by stand-off Ryan Sweeney.

However, six minutes into the second period, Elliott stepped his way over from 30 metres out and Deighton's conversion made it 22-10.

Park responded immediately with a try by substitute Joe Gallacher improved by Sweeney, but man-of-the-match Deighton's 56th-minute hat-trick try and conversion proved decisive and, just for good measure, he added a penalty to post a personal tally of 22 points and seal a hard-earned win.

Elliott and hooker Dave Hayes were also prominent for Heworth while centre Harry Radcliffe made a promising debut.

York Acorn 'A' beat Hull Wyke 28-20 to stay top of the premier division.

Tries came from Joel Johnson, debutant Kurt Patterson, who is an Aussie in York for the summer, Dan Lazenby, who added four goals, Reece Rushworth and Daryl North.

Acorn were under pressure for much of the game, taking ten minutes just to get out of their own ten-metre area, but defended resolutely.

Wyke eventually went ahead but Acorn stormed back with four tries before half-time for a 22-4 lead.

The visitors fought back to 22-20 before North crossed five minutes from time to seal victory.

York Lokomotive lost 35-20 at home to Ossett Trinity in division two.
