YORK Acorn A jumped to the top of the Yorkshire Men’s League premier division standings after a 44-10 home triumph over Norland Sharks.

The Thanet Road outfit have, however, played two more matches than the three teams below them during this early stage of the season.

Adam Speck opened the scoring after capitalising on a mistake and Dan Lazenby’s quick thinking then saw him anticipate an interception to score.

Fine combination play between Michael Embleton and man-of-the-match Brandon Harris saw the ever-supporting Joe Budd add another try, as Lazenby added the extras.

Tim Stubbs also touched down and Andy Gargan barged his way across the line like a prop forward to make it 26-0.

Andy Goodwin and Liam Bilton efforts, either side of half-time, gave the visitors brief hope but a mistake from the kick off, following the second try, let in Stubbs again.

Soon afterwards, Joe Porter came on to the ball at pace and set off on an unstoppable, angled run, whilst Harris rounded off the afternoon’s work with an excellent break that split two defenders.

He then repeated the feat two tackles later, after keeping up with the movement, receiving the ball again and breaking two further challenges before sidestepping the fullback to score under the sticks.

Heworth, meanwhile, gained their first division one points of the season with a dramatic 34-32 win at Wibsey Warriors.

Player-coach George Elliot's last-minute, hat-trick try and loose forward Joe Deighton's conversion proved the difference in a match that was level 16-16 and saw the lead change seven times.

The home side had earlier drawn first blood Daniel Conroy’s try, converted by Matthew Cumberworth.

But man-of-the-match Elliott responded by diving over direct from acting half.

Elliot’s defence-splitting pass then put Deighton in the clear and prop Charlie Magill was in support to cross for an excellent try that was goaled by the man who had set him up.

The Villagers extended their advantage when full-back Lewis Worthington followed up an Elliott kick and Deighton added the extras.

The hosts struck back, though, with Bruce Mpoto and Conroy tries, one of which was converted by stand-off Kieron Smith to level the scores.

Heworth lost second-rower Ben Eastwood to the sin bin just two minutes into the second period and Wibsey took advantage with Cumberworth crossing for an effort goaled by Smith.

But the Villagers were back on terms after a strong run by Deighton and he went on to kick the conversion.

The hosts also had a player sinbinned, but regained the lead through an unconverted score from Joe Ratcliffe before Elliott's second try and Deighton's fourth goal put the Black and Whites 28-26 in front with seven minutes remaining.

Three minutes from the final whistle, Warriors were in the driving seat when Elliott Culling crossed and Smith added the extras.

But Elliott's forced his way past several defenders to square the match and Deighton’s coolly-converted kick sealed a nail-biting contest.

The York & District Amateur Rugby League, meanwhile, are holding a meeting at South Bank Social Club on Wednesday night, start 7.30pm.
