THE departure of full-back Tom Hields midway through the first half sparked a mini-collapse from which New Earswick All Blacks ALRC could not recover as they fell 38-10 at King Cross Park.

The result left All Blacks at the foot of the Pennine League championship and player-coach Jack Stearman disappointed, though he did take positives from the game.

He also expected quick revenge when the sides meet again in two weeks' time.

“We had people in places they don’t normally play and have had to fill in due to unavailability," he said, All Blacks having had to forfeit their previous match for the same reason.

"Jack Carling played 80 minutes at prop - a huge effort to name but one.

"The rub of the green wasn’t with us. Too much ball went to ground and they capitalised.

"King Cross have improved since last year and we look forward to welcoming them at White Rose Avenue to put things right.”

King Cross began brightly but All Blacks countered well and centre Jack Law scored after a long kick by man of the match Liam Gargan was chased down by winger Sam Cooper.

Two quick-fire home tries turned things around before Law crossed again, Tom Holmes converting.

Hields, though, had to be helped off after an ankle injury and King Cross crossed three times in the next 15 minutes leaving All Blacks 26-10 behind.

Strong words from Stearman saw them come out strongly in the second half but, while their defence was much-improved, they could not break through, going close numerous times only to be thwarted by the last pass not finding its target.

Instead, King Cross made 32-10 late on and got a length-of-the-field try on full-time after All Blacks, camped in the hosts' half, spilled the ball.

Stearman added: "It is again the 20 minutes in the first half that seems to be beating us. If we don’t concede the 18 points in 15 minutes, it's anyone’s coming out for the second half."

Three tries in the last ten minutes saw Selby Warriors topple division two leaders CK Vikings 30-18 and go joint-top after one of the best games at Foxhill Lane for many seasons.

The visitors scored straight from the kick-off but Selby started to win the physical battle and, with Luke Thomas and Mark Hanson excelling on their returns to the pack, they levelled as Fati Okatete danced past three men, Gavyn Lightowler adding his first of five conversions.

CK went 12-6 up but Warriors prop Scot Birtch equalised before half-time.

Selby got on top after the interval and, after CK crossed again against the run of play, they threw the kitchen sink at the visitors.

Okatete broke through but had the ball stripped, then Gary Watkinson fired out a pass for Miacael Wassell to score only for the ref to rule it forward.

They eventually got reward when prop Luke Thomas barged over to equalise.

Then stand-off Lightowler broke through and off-loaded to Toby Thorpe, who raced in.

And Lightowler did it again to send Dominic Liversidge to the posts.
