HEWORTH ARLFC gained their first home success in Yorkshire Men’s League division two after a crushing 52-16 win over Normanton Knights ‘A’ at Elm Park Way.

After a shaky start, the Villagers posted five first-half tries for a 28-4 interval lead and went on to double their tally in the second period.

The game was however, marred after only six minutes of the second half by a 35-minute delay while Heworth’s 17-year-old winger George Wallace was first treated and carried off on a stretcher to be taken to hospital with a suspected serious back injury.

Heworth made an unconvincing start littered with unforced errors and needless penalties which led to the visitors taking an early lead through giant prop Clark Thompson.

But parity was restored two minutes later, winger Dan Craig touching down after a fine break by centre Danny Simpson.

Craig again crossed and loose forward and man of the match Joe Deighton landed the conversion.

Heworth hooker Ross Varley jinked his way across from 20 metres out and was followed in quick succession by Simpson who snapped up a loose ball on the halfway line and raced away to score. Deighton slotted both conversions.

Just before the break stand off Christian Pollock added Heworth’s fifth touchdown, scorching almost the length of the field for a fine individual try to which Deighton tagged on the extras.

The Villagers increased their advantage after only three minutes of the second period when returning veteran forward Wayne Foster’s smart offload put centre Ben Stoker over in the corner.

After the delay to the stricken Wallace, Knights winger Danny Webster crossed, scrum half Joe Crossland adding the goal.

Heworth countered instantly when substitute Sam Johnson crossed after a strong surge by Simpson, and then Stoker also went over.

Normanton’s final try came from benchman Robert Culshaw improved by stand off Mike Firth, sandwiched between touchdowns for home skipper Chris Varley and a second for brother Ross, who replicated his first half effort, both of which Deighton converted to complete an impressive victory.
