HEWORTH ARLC were on the wrong end of a 40-10 scoreline at home to Coventry Bears in National Conference League division three.

The game was tight until the last ten minutes of the first half, when the visitors moved ten points clear and they then dominated the second period.

Defences were on top for the opening 20 minutes but the Villagers broke through on 22 minutes when hooker Rich Rogers forced his way over from close range. Tom Barron converted.

The Bears levelled on 31 minutes, with livewire hooker Alex Brown scooting over and Greg Moore adding the extras.

Brown then took advantage of some uncertainty in the Heworth defence to touch down three minutes later. Moore again converted.

With half-time looming, Coventry crossed again when Alex Mills-Baker made a strong run down the wing and went in at the corner.

After a poor end to the first half, Heworth were dealt a blow four minutes into the second half when debutant centre Andy Morris had a try disallowed for a forward pass.

Good support play saw Moore go in on 54 minutes, with Stephen Coleman converting.

Coventry were rampant during that period and, two minutes later, Mills-Baker crossed the whitewash and Coleman converted.

Gavin Grant increased their lead to 32-6 with a try on 65 minutes, before winger Mike Welsh bagged a consolation score for Heworth, racing 30 metres to the line after a Coventry error.

An up and under kick evaded the home defence allowing Tim Stevens to cross on 77 minutes and player coach Tom Tsang rounded off the scoring with a last minute try.

The Villagers’ best players were Rogers, Morris, Jonny Payne and Mike Crossman.

York Acorn were without a game in the premier division, but results elsewhere meant they stayed out of the drop zone.
