A LATE try from winger Luke Swales earned York Acorn ‘A’ a 22-16 victory over Milford Marlins ‘A’ in the Forty-20 Yorkshire Men’s League despite a red card for Josh Thompson.
Thompson was dismissed in the premier division clash at Thanet Road after a brawl which also saw Blue and Golds team-mate Carl Loft sin-binned along with Marlins’ Ryan Pinder.
Acorn stormed into a 16-0 lead after 34 minutes, but were pegged back to 16-16 by the hour mark, before Swales’ 71st-minute winner.
Prop Richard Ashton opened the scoring for the hosts on ten minutes and scrum-half Ken Shepherd converted.
Full-back Thomas Mackley crossed on 27 minutes and Shepherd again added the extras, while man of the match James Mountford, Acorn’s hooker, went over in the 34th minute.
A try by Antony Hallihan made it 16-4 at half-time and three tries in eight minutes from Dwaine McRae, Joe Ramsden and Henry Mingham levelled the scores on 59 minutes.
Then, with nine minutes left on the clock, a kick from Shepherd was chased down by Swales, who crossed after a 60 metre burst.
On Friday night, York Lokomotive were 32-26 winners over division two visitors Heworth ‘A’ at New Lane.
Scarborough Pirates edged to a 32-28 victory at Thornhill Trojans in division one, while Selby Warriors suffered a 30-4 home defeat by Myton Warriors ‘A’ in the entry division.
