CITY of York Hockey Club Under-16 boys ‘A’ warmed up for the Yorkshire Youth League play-offs with a 1-0 victory over Wakefield ‘A’.
Top marksman Josh Longster scored the winning goal with a clever deflection from a penalty corner at Brigshaw High School.
A second scheduled match was cancelled as Ben Rhydding ‘B’ withdrew.
York will contest the end of season play-offs at Halifax HC on Sunday, April 18.
The U16s ‘B’ team were beaten 5-0 in both of their Yorkshire Youth League fixtures at Thirsk.
The deficits proved to be havy only after York lost a player to injury against both Sheffield and Driffield, against whom ’keeper Nathan Wilson excelled.
York U12 boys ‘A’ ended the Yorkshire Youth League season on a high with five wins and a draw at Pocklington.
They opened with a 0-0 draw against a strong Ben Rhydding ‘B’ team before beating Doncaster ‘A’ 2-0 with goals from Danny Vaughan and Sam Engleman.
James Fitton (3), Vaughan (2) and Henry Wilson scored in the 6-0 win over Thirsk ‘A’, while Engleman (2) and Wilson did for Ben Rhydding ‘C’ before Fitton settled the 1-0 win over Bridlington ‘A’.
The U12s ‘B’ team beat Halifax 3-0 with Jack Harrington (2) and Drew Mansell on target, and after a 0-0 draw with Driffield beat Bingley Bees 3-0 thanks to Harrington (2) and Matthew O-Brown.
