TEENAGER David Hague produced two rounds the professionals would have been proud of as he dominated the York Union of Golf Clubs Junior Championship.

The Malton & Norton Golf Club member fired efforts of 68 and 67 to claim the prestigious trophy at York GC - beating Fulford’s Matthew Roberts into second place by an amazing 11 shots.

The two rounds gave him a cumulative gross total of fiveunder- par and moved his handicap to plus one.

“I am very pleased,” the 17-yearold said. “It was good out there and the course was in great condition.

I putted well and kept it in play off the tee. The greens were fast and undulating and difficult to putt on.

“I’ve got ambitions to go as far in the game as I can and I am thrilled to have won the York Union of Golf Clubs Junior Championship. It is the ultimate prize for a junior in the area.”

Hague’s clubmate Kai Farrow was second in the nett score competition, his total of 136 only eclipsed by Ciaran Matthews, a member at Sandburn Hall GC in Flaxton, who recorded a score of 134 thanks to nett scores of 67 and 67.

Matthews actually finished third overall but, as the rules stipulated golfers could only win one competition, he was given the highest available honour. Easingwold’s Simon Morley stepped up a place.

With Hague the overall winner, Fulford’s James Cass won the best gross morning score for a 73. A 75 from Russell Warwick, of Flaxby, claimed the afternoon prize.

The best morning nett score went to Fulford’s George Strachan with 66. James Kay, from the host club, scooped afternoon honours with a marvellous 64.

David Smith, president of the York Union of Golf Clubs, said: “David Hague’s scores were an amazing effort. We are grateful to York Golf Club for hosting the event and it was good to see the golf of these youngsters given some tough pin positions.

“There are a lot of quality players coming through and that is the really encouraging thing.”
