HEWORTH ARLC Under-10s and opponents Meltham All Blacks defied the wet conditions to play a fine, evenly-fought game of Yorkshire Junior League rugby league.

The visitors to Elmpark Way just came out on top but both sides showed good skills and standards.

Heworth’s tries came from Jay Richards and Harrison Briggs, with Jay Ogilvie adding a conversion. Richards and Briggs were also the men of the match, with James Leach the most improved player.

Heworth U9s got the better of Doncaster Toll Bar at Elmpark Way in a superb advert for junior rugby - notching 12 tries along the way.

Ben Young, the coaches’ man of the match, Harvey Watson, Oliver Lambert and Oliver King set the platform for victory with some hard running in the middle of the pitch, with Watson deservedly scoring the first of their tries.

The space these runs created helped the impressive Oliver Pratt - the parents’ and opposition’s choice of man of the match - to add six more tries to his season’s tally and for top tackler Lucas Burden to bag a superb hat-trick.

Toll Bar were always dangerous but, with great tackling during periods of defence, including Arthur Hodgson’s great try-saver on his own line, the visitors were kept at bay. Young, Burden and Pratt marshalled Heworth’s defence in fine style.

Kian Ogilvie scored a scintillating length-of-the-field try, dived over for a second and was awarded the magic moment award for creating a try for Pratt with a pass that took two defenders out of the play.

Reagan Brough was awarded the most improved award, with Keane Brough, Feargus Brown and Sam Hunt also making telling contributions at key times.

Heworth U8s went into their penultimate game of the season against Hunslet Warriors full of confidence after last week’s demolition of Odsal - but they came a cropper in a narrow defeat.

Adam Hodgson opened the scoring with a typical full-length effort - the first of his two tries - and Heworth went into the break seemingly coasting after man-of-the-match Callum Costanzo, in his best game for the team, went over in the corner.

The second half was a different story for Heworth, though, despite the efforts of most improved player Johnathan Hartley and top tacklers Thomas Hardy and Freddie Wilson, as a few errors let Hunslet fight back to go in front.

Heworth rallied in the last quarter through some great running through the excellent Dan Clarke, and a trademark Freddie Wilson try, taking five players over the line with him, but they struggled to claw the result back.

Last-ditch tackling then denied Adam Hodgson as Hunslet held on to claim the spoils.

Heworth U7s visited Stanningley to take part in a mini tournament, with Criggleston also involved.

The Villagers played some great passing rugby and showed excllent team spirit, with the last game finishing in a great 7-7 draw.

Top performances came from Jay Downes, Ellis Harper, Ellis Southerington and Isaac Cook, who all received certificates.
