A SALUTARY lesson was dealt out to Pocklington RUFC Under-13s in their first outing after the yuletide break.

Visitors Castleford arrived at the Percy Road ground boasting a considerably heftier physical presence.

Even the Castleford backs were bigger than the home forwards so there was always an uphill battle.

Pocklington set off well, but were soon unsettled by Castleford winning scrum ball which they passed out to score an unconverted try.

Pock applied pressure but Castleford had a particularly big and fast runner in the backs who was able to score twice in quick succession.

Both sides made changes and Pock regained momentum but yet another strong run enabled the west Yorkshire outfit to increase their advantage.

More woe was added just after half-time with another Castleford try.

Pock kept on pressing and started playing some fluent rugby.

They won a penalty which was passed smartly to Edward Jibson who ran straight through the Castleford defence to score.

For the next quarter of an hour, the homesters managed to keep hold of possession and camped in the opposition’s 22.

They came close to adding to their total on half a dozen occasions, but a second breakthrough would not come.

As Casletford regained a toe-hold in the game, size again told and eventually Castleford broke from deep, passing the ball to their strong runner with Pocklington once again unable to catch him.

The last word fell to the visitors, who were able to cross for a final time shortly before the final whistle.
